I work nationally across the UK, and internationally, as an academic researcher and consultant, to help create evidence-based volunteer programmes in policing and beyond. Awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2023, I will soon be embarking on an international learning trip focused on improving the impact and experience of volunteer police. Many millions of people worldwide volunteer in policing and public safety, but it has been a peripheral and neglected area for research, policy and innovation. My work focuses on (1) innovating volunteering and citizen engagement for what will be a very different future, (2) transforming data approaches, evaluation, and evidencing across volunteer programmes, and (3) helping to shift policy and strategic thinking to recognise the potential impact of volunteers and how that potential can be realised. I am always enthusiastic to link up with police organisations - and more widely across justice, emergency services, and public safety - who are visionary, ambitious, and innovative in how they engage volunteers and who are committed to developing evidence-based approaches. My current work projects include helping police organisations to enhance and measure the 'value' of their volunteer policing, helping to clarify strategic purpose and direction for volunteer programmes, and practically on improving volunteer management, developing inclusive volunteering, empowering volunteers, and improving the volunteer experience.I have worked extensively across policing in the UK and increasingly internationally for a decade focused on volunteer programmes.
