May 2017 - Present

Senior Custom Projects Engineer

Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom

I was first member of the Custom Solutions team, re-engineering the standard camera for special use cases, such as embedding in caps, helmets and motorbikes. I set up GoPro’s first UK engineering office and assisted in the recruiting of 3 more engineers; setting up local suppliers and all necessary infrastructure. I was responsible for everything from schematics to PCB layout to production and test, working with the mechanical and RF engineer to produce a number of projects to some very tight timescales. Required considerable ingenuity and lateral thinking as we could not change fundamental camera hardware or software. Also was involved in field testing at various events including MotoGP events across Europe, and NFL games at Wembley.Projects:Tethered lens camera (2 generations): Separating lens&sensor assembly from camera electronics, over long flex pcb, allowing main body to be substantially reduced in size, so it could be fitted in compact space. Second version also had LCD touchscreen, which was separated from camera so that it could be operated over USB-C. High speed serial links used.Camera Integrations: NFL Referee caps; Hockey helmets; ‘Grammy’ trophies; Wimbledon tennis net.Key technologies used: USB-C; SDHC cards; HDMI; SPI; I2C; DC:DC converters; Qi Wireless Charging; Xilinx Zynq FPGA; Li-ion batteries; RFPC; HDI PCBs
