About Iain Kaufman-O'Keefe

Iain is a Technologies Development and implementation engineer in training at Hatch. His focus is in the energy and mining/metal industries where he primarily has worked on nuclear projects for clients in the fusion and nuclear waste space. He also works with clients in the metals industry focusing on custom equipment design in pyrometallurgy such as electric arc smelters for nickel and steel production.Additionally, Iain works to develop technologies to help clients with their energy transition needs. This had led to working as a program manager for hydrogen and carbon technologies. Iain also looks at integration of these technologies to systems within Hatch's existing client base in pyromet, base metals, and bulk metals.Iain holds a Bachelor of Applied Science with Honours in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University.

    Kingston, Ontario, Canada
Consultant through the APSC 480 course, interdisciplinary industry capstone. Team worked with the Bowman Centre for Sustainable Energy on a technical feasibility study for the City of Sarnia helping to develop the hydrogen economy. - Defined the application of hydrogen in the 21st century and quantified the opportunity Sarnia has to transition into a hydrogen hub. Work focused on the development of strategic resources in Sarnia-Lambton such as retrofitting existing petrochemical industry as well as looking at the application of salt caverns. Salt caverns as a storage entity and buffer to local energy markets became a focus of the report.- Developed conceptual requirements, and designs of the facility including cavern, transmission system, and electrolyzers.- Conducted economic modeling to determine applicability of hydrogen applications ranging from power to gas systems to energy storage using HOEP arbitrage or global adjustment busting.
  • Queen'S Space Engineering Team
    Senior Mechanical Team Member
    Queen'S Space Engineering Team May 2020 - Apr 2021
    Kingston, Ontario, Canada
Senior mechanical engineering team member focusing on simulation and design. Acted as team lead on the drawing and FEA team. Ran structural and motion studies in ANSYS for the chassis and rover arm. Worked extensively on chassis design. Created aluminum sheet metal body on the chassis and developed several conceptual steel chassis frames, eventually turning into the final design. Created manufacturing drawings for both body and frame pieces of the chassis.

Selected as a speakers coordinator at the Queens Global Energy Conference. Worked to develop a strategic plan to execute during the year. Helped to develop a theme and create a list of interesting companies to speak on energy issues and technologies. Recruited a speaker for our fall taster event and coordinated logistics. Working to create a roster of speakers for the conference in May.
  • Nuclear Waste Management Organization
    Student Developmental Engineer
Nuclear Waste Management Organization May 2019 - Aug 2020
    Toronto, Ontario, Canada
The NWMO is in charge of designing and implementing Canada's plan for the safe and long term storage of high-level nuclear waste. As a developmental student engineer my role changes to meet the business needs of the organization. I am working in the engineering department in a mechanical engineering role, assisting in the technical and business needs of the company. Aside from working on engineering design work, I have been exposed to and worked on project management and procurement. I have managed engineering contracts and acted as the liaison between the client and the organization. Through doing this, I have gained experience into project work flow, quality assurance and client relations; learning how to manage the needs of the organization while balancing the requirements of project stakeholders. I worked with external vendors to develop preliminary designs for complex nuclear systems. Through this I was PM on large conceptual design and optimization project tasked with improving the manufacturing, cost and functionality. I created the conceptual designs for review as well as project governance and flow through a global EMP and PQP. This project and its associated tasks will be executed by the new interns well into 2021.

    Kingson, Ontario
Under the professional development team in the Queens University Engineering Society, I work as the Industry Relations Chair. This position acts as a liaison between industry contacts and the student body, providing students with opportunities to improve their professional skills and make connections with industry. As well I look to provide companies with new and innovative ways to recruit students and improve their exposure on campus. Under myself I have hired a team of 4 individuals, whom I give tasks and work with to build the platform I developed with them over the summer.
  • Queen'S University
Mechanical Design Engineer At Reactor Materials Testing Lab
    Queen'S University May 2018 - Aug 2018
    Kingston, Ontario, Canada
The Reactor Materials Testing Lab is a 12 MeV Tandetron particle accelerator under Professor Mark Daymond. Dr. Daymond is currently both the NSERC-UNENE Industrial Research Chair in Nuclear Materials and the Canada Research Chair in Mechanics of Materials. RMTL simulates the effects of nuclear reactors to develop more resilent, stronger and cheaper materials for use in the energy industry.I was tasked with developing a system to irradiate targets evenly without having to shut the accelerator down. This system is called an energy degrader and it saves 100's of hours per irradiation. I designed, built and validated the system over the course of 4 months. The project involved ultra high vacuum, radioactive environments, and extreme size constraints. Through the project we were tasked with determining project goals based on advanced particle physics, simulations of irradiation and tests. From this I developed a linear energy degrader that uses actuators to push aluminum foils in front of the beam line. I was given $10'000 to design the degrader but finished ~$6000 under budget.I used my skills in project work, CAD, coding (MATLAB) and manufacturing to bring the design from initial research into final product.
