Technical manager leading the Corporate Operations group, a team of 11 professionalstaff with responsibility for delivery and management of much of the University’s core IT infrastructure.The team has specific responsibilities for provision of Unix services, Oracle DBA activities, and technical support of a myriad of corporate applications which utilise these platforms.The team’s specific responsibilities include an extensive physical and virtual server infrastructure based primarily on HP and Oracle technology and VMware virtualisation.The team has responsibility for supporting the infrastructure to deliver both bespoke in-house and commercial packaged applications, including Student Records, Finance, Payroll and a large portfolio of similar applications for the University’s Professional Services.The team also has prime responsibility for the environments supporting MyPlace, the University’s moodle-based Virtual Learning Environment, arguably the University’s highest profile service. It also has joint responsibility for provision of data centre services.

I work for IT services who manage the IT infrastructure for the University. My primary tasks are- Virtualisation (VMWare)- Linux/Solaris Administration (RedHat/Ubuntu/Solaris 10-11)- Windows Administration (Windows Server 2012 - 2016)- Database Administration (Mysql/MS SQL/Oracle)- Managing storage (Hitachi)- Managing system backups (Commvault)- Managing a monitoring system (Nagios)- Setting up DevOps systems such as kibana/wazuh/ansible- CyberSecurity tasks (Nessus)- Shell Programming (Perl)

Royal Bank of Scotland was one of the world’s largest banks. The project team were assigned out to project managers to implement the Unix part of projects. • My primary project was to migrate an ABN AMRO trading system from a Chicago datacenter to an Edinburgh datacenter. The system was one of the largest trading platforms in ABN and the project had to complete on time or the bank would face millions of pounds of fines. • I successfully setup and delivered the migration which comprised a number of production and test environments running weblogic, oracle and VERITAS cluster/volume manager.

I worked for Bright Grey which is part of the Royal London group. They offered a number of insurance products through a web portal. • My primary role was support of the Unix (Solaris) infrastructure (web/app servers and SAN) for the web portal. The system was based on websphere, oracle and apache. The SAN was an HP EVA and the backup system was veritas netbackup. • My secondary role was supporting the Unix (HP-UX) infrastructure as the group had a separate internal system based on oracle and jboss but utilizing HP-UX servers. • I completed a number of projects including upgrading the web and application servers to solaris zones and setting up capacity/security monitoring.

I worked for IT services who manage the IT infrastructure for the University’s administrative departments. This comprises payroll, finance, the library and the virtual learning environment. • My primary role was to support the Unix systems. I was involved in all aspects of support including purchasing, project planning and problem resolution. • My main project was to migrate the virtual learning system from a static site to a weblogic system. This was achieved without downtime and was in use by over 20,000 students. • My successes include setting up a monitoring system that covers the Unix and windows environment, setting up the infrastructure for a new library system and writing software to manage the active directory domain.

I worked in the E-trading team which supported systems running FX and Fixed Income Trading across sites in London, New York and Tokyo. Primarily I dealt with a web based FX trading application (JPeX) which was a JP Morgan product but I also got involved in a number of apps, • My primary role was to ensure the availability of the JPeX platform in its production and staging environments. We handled all system upgrades, all problem management and I was involved with development teams, 1st line support and 3rd party suppliers. • The environment was a mixture of Linux and Solaris servers with an Apache Stronghold front-end and a Weblogic/Sybase back-end. • My Successes included migrating the platform from Solaris to Linux and migrating support from an initial two man team based in Glasgow to a five man team based in the US and Asia. I also built a document and system portal that aided users in resolving issues and automating tasks. • By the time I left the team had made the platform more reliable, more resilient and cheaper to run. I was offered the team-lead position but I had decided that I wanted a more hands on system role.

Iomart is an integrated internet and telecommunications supplier which evolved into two distinct divisions. NetIntelligence (internet & network security software) & Iomart Internet (traditional internet hosting services).• I setup and maintained a web hosting platform comprising UNIX and NT servers running email and web services to over 3,000 customers.• I created Perl and Java programs linked to an Oracle database to provision and manage all customer accounts.• I created Perl and PHP web applications to enable 1st and 2nd level support staff to debug and resolve customer account problems.• I resolved customer problems that could not be solved by 1st or 2nd level support.
