About Iain Wadham

I am now delighted to join Floyd Slaski Architects – a long-established practice with an admirable record and trajectory known for its specialist healthcare design but with a diverse portfolio. I shall be excited to gain some of that specialist medical knowledge, whilst also developing their commercial, residential and select domestic sectors. A firm believer in the strength of cross-sector and cross-discipline design, I am really looking forward to re-kindling contacts with many of you, and to delivering some outstanding, highly sustainable projects. My integration into Floyd Slaski is a convincing commercial and cultural fit, broadening an already strong service offering. In my years with ESA architects Floyd Slaski were working in parallel on the Howard de Walden Estate, and between us we have authored 19 projects serving medical, commercial, residential and retail uses – all within Marylebone’s historic fabric and fantastically constrained sites. We love challenges, and our exposure to them makes us all the more resourceful as designers and solution-finders.

I am an architect and maker. My built works not only encompass a score of London's West-End commercial and mixed use developments with clients such as The Howard de Walden Estate, Grosvenor and Frogmore Developments, but also a swathe of hands-on, detail-driven fabrications. My built works not only encompass a score of London's West-End commercial and mixed use developments with clients such as The Howard de Walden Estate, Grosvenor and Frogmore Developments, but also a swathe of hands-on, detail-driven fabrications. I am equally at-ease steering a design team toward the best solutions for large developments as I am designing exquisite joinery details. I have worked as a fabricator and machinist, and have built cars, engines, furniture, bicycles, acrylic stairs, snowboard bindings, test rigs and production machinery. These practical skills are equally matched by architectural thought leadership and conceptual clarity - always acknowledging craftsmanship whilst producing convincing designs to negotiate the planning process. As a solution-finder I enjoy challenges and have a dogged determination to pursue what I know to be possible. During my time with Massimiliano Fuksas in Rome, I'm proud to have played a part in projects such as the Nardini grappa distillery (glass ellipsoids) and a suite of Armani stores (bespoke light fixtures and shop fittings). These experiences, balanced with many years of serving home-owners' needs, enables an informed targeting of where to invest in detail and where to deploy straightforward building solutions.I cherish having been part of the 'families' of clients, consultants and team-members over the course of my projects, many of whom I consider friends, and look forward to IWA continuing those collaborations.Iain07872 681 017iain.wadham@iwa-architects.co.uk Show less

Capita purchased ESA architects in 2012, and whilst for private sector work I maintained the ESA brand, my experience became relevant to Capita's Public Sector opportunities. What better introduction to the Public Sector than as discipline lead on the prestigious Houses of Parliament framework (FWK 1097). Working on the bid through 2017 gave me valuable insight into the procurement process, and with concerted efforts that work was rewarded by the team's successful place on the framework… Show more Capita purchased ESA architects in 2012, and whilst for private sector work I maintained the ESA brand, my experience became relevant to Capita's Public Sector opportunities. Working on the bid through 2017 gave me valuable insight into the procurement process, and with concerted efforts that work was rewarded by the team's successful place on the framework, awarded late 2017.Understanding our client's challenges included interesting and privileged visits to The Palace of Westminster. As a Grade 1 Architect and Lead Designer with cross-discipline understanding I was well placed to serve that framework. Through this I was introduced to NEC contracts and level 2 BIM procedures. I ran a small team of dedicated architects within an office of 60 and grew to specialise in central London commercial developments having heritage assets, but always carried smaller diverse work with Public Realm, Public Art, the odd extension and bespoke fabrications. Our enthusiasm drove staff engagement sessions and presentations, and I like to think our team was a good place to be for mentoring, from work experience to part III studies.Over my time at ESA (from 2004) we became architect… Show more I ran a small team of dedicated architects within an office of 60 and grew to specialise in central London commercial developments having heritage assets, but always carried smaller diverse work with Public Realm, Public Art, the odd extension and bespoke fabrications. Our enthusiasm drove staff engagement sessions and presentations, and I like to think our team was a good place to be for mentoring, from work experience to part III studies.Over my time at ESA (from 2004) we became architect of choice for the Howard de Walden Estate, delivering a current total of 14 of their larger and more strategic commercial projects. In 2014 we delivered Grosvenor's first 'boutique office' concept at 69 Grosvenor Street, and have seen a growing number of mixed-use projects on Oxford Street.I became known to Westminster's planning and conservation officers, and I thrived on the intricacies of central-London sites and became an experienced deliverer who enjoys the build process. Predominantly private residential, juggling multiple projects through all stages. Always rewarding to explore the adaptability in design of the handful of recognized Victorian terrace building typologies, and to steer clients through the process. Small works gives one a useful grounding in all roles, including party-wall surveying and contract administration.
