Profile bio

About Iain Broome

Very Meta is my freelance content design studio, which I set up in 2017. I’m currently using my 20 years of experience on projects that aim to make public sector services better.I'm a plain English specialist and a big fan of making complex things sound simple. But as you probably know, content design is about far more than words. So it’s handy that I also enjoy getting my teeth into user research, prototyping, journey mapping and all the other gubbins needed to make products and services work well. One of the great things about working with public sector teams is I often get to pass on the stuff I know, so they can do it themselves. That might mean some good listening on my part to make sure they get the right content strategy, guidelines or even people in place. But it can also mean hands-on content design or plain English training that helps build their practical skills. See an exciting client list: verymeta.com==*The before times*I’ve been freelancing for almost seven years. I previously worked at two agencies where I earned my content chops, learnt how to interact with clients and colleagues, and lead multidisciplinary teams. Patience. Politeness. Persistence. That kind of thing.*The Workshop*Once a top 50 design agency that delivered large-scale digital projects for notable clients. I started out writing copy for Morrisons and Castrol (yikes) and ended up working on big web projects for large companies and various government departments. This was back in the late 00s, when I was already the kind of content bod who did the user research, wireframes, information architecture and lots more you might now call content design.*Yoomee*A great digital agency that worked exclusively with charities and third-sector organisations. I was senior producer, which meant organising and leading multidisciplinary teams on top of all the actual content work. I worked on web projects for clients including Eden Project, Kirklees Council, mHabitat, Save The Children and Breast Cancer Now. Yoomee is where I first got to grips with agile projects, design sprints and other ways of working that are commonplace now.==In 2019 I founded Sheffield Content Club, a free meetup for the city's many fantastic content creators. I previously organised Sheffield Tech for Good, a regular event hosted by Yoomee. Finally, my first novel is called A is for Angelica and is published by Legend Press. Reviews were very kind and include praise from The Daily Mail, Time Out and Nathan Filer, winner of the Costa Prize.

Listed skills include Copywriting, Blogging, Creative Writing, Social Media, and 30 others.

Freelance Content Designer

Current

Sheffield, United Kingdom

Very Meta is my freelance copywriting and content design studio. For the last three years, I've worked with the team at FutureGov/TPXimpact as content design lead on several public sector projects. That includes work for the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, NHS Blood and Transplant, HM Land Registry, Buckinghamshire Council, Essex County Council and Camden Council. Most of my work sees me using research and data to design content that people actually want and need. I also develop content strategies, turn complicated ideas into plain English and write thoughtful copy for print and screen. That’s the stuff that takes up most of my weeks. But I do other things too. Like run content workshops, create educational videos, produce podcasts and record voiceovers.Working either directly or through an agency, I've also developed content for Facebook, Bang & Olufsen, FutureGov/TPXimpact, EcoTree, Sheffield Hallam University, Westfield Health, Good Things Foundation, Perform Green, TribePad, Sheffield Digital, Cornerstones Education, The SEO Works, the National Adoption Service and bestselling author, Wilbur Smith.

Apr 2014 - Present

Senior Digital Producer

Sheffield, United Kingdom

Yoomee is a digital agency that creates bespoke websites and online services for charities and non-profits. As a Senior Producer, I led agile project teams, developed content strategies, produced a range of content and managed several high-profile projects. For the Eden Project, I led a team to design and develop Eden Project Communities, a social action that reaches seven million people. The content strategy process saw me run a series of workshops, create research-based audience personas and put in place a new content production system. I wrote and developed new guidelines and worked with Eden’s content team to establish a governance process.I also developed a mobile app called Healthy Island for West Wakefield Health. I researched and wrote all content for the app alongside healthcare experts. On all projects at Yoomee, I was responsible for managing budgets, allocating tasks and making sure we delivered on time and to plan. Finally, I organised and hosted Sheffield Tech for Good, a regular meet up hosted by Yoomee that brings together people who work in the tech and 'social good' communities.

Feb 2016 - Feb 2017

Communications Manager

Cornerstones Education is the UK's leading creative curriculum company for primary schools. I managed the marketing team and was the editorial lead to a separate team of teachers and subject specialists.Cornerstones originally hired me to write, edit and proofread their flagship curriculum product. I went on to produce educational video content, audio content and hundreds of teaching resources aimed at primary school teachers and children. In doing so, I developed new content style and standard guides used by Cornerstones’ teachers, designers and subject specialists.Working with an external agency, I also created the wireframes, information architecture and content for a new Cornerstones website. My aim was to simplify the company’s offer by focusing on simple navigation and clear, people-centred copy. The new site, combined with a switch to content rather than traditional marketing, helped me and my team tell Cornerstones’ story to both existing and potential customers. Finally, I overhauled Cornerstones’ content production process. Previously, both educational and marketing content was managed via a series of complicated spreadsheets and Word documents. I designed and implemented a new streamlined process using cloud-based apps, including Google Docs and Trello.

Dec 2014 - Feb 2016

Researcher In Digital Communications

Sheffield, United Kingdom

I was part of the interaction design team in Sheffield Hallam’s Cultural, Communications and Computing Research Institute (C3RI). As part of the Innovation Futures initiative, I worked with SMEs in Yorkshire to provide short-term consultancy, helping them produce digital content and develop new products. That included a new content strategy, website and membership scheme for Writing Yorkshire, a non-profit organisation part-funded by the Arts Council.

Jan 2013 - Mar 2014

Copywriter And Content Manager

Sheffield, United Kingdom

The Workshop is a design and communications agency whose clients include large businesses, educational organisations, charities and non-profits. I produced and edited content for websites, web apps, marketing campaigns, branding projects, training materials and various other communications. As a senior member of the content team, I worked alongside a team of talented designers and developers. Our ethos was to produce research-led products that were technically robust, perfect for their audience, but that also rather sparkled. We did it by really thinking about the problem and putting content first. For me, that meant carrying out user research and testing, assessing usability and accessibility, and creating all manner of wireframes and personas. For most of my time at The Workshop, I managed all internal and external communications. I told the company’s story through its website, social media accounts and marketing materials, developing a house tone of voice and shared style guide. In 2012, I spoke at the Children's Media Conference, leading a panel called 'Engaging Kids, Connecting Communities’.

Jun 2006 - Oct 2012

Senior Publications Officer

Sheffield, United Kingdom

I was part of the team responsible for writing, developing and publishing the University’s big-budget, corporate publications, including the online and printed prospectuses. My editorial work was rooted in plain English, heavily project-driven and based around working to tight print schedules. I carried out an in-house training programme for faculty marketing staff, which involved writing materials and scheduling a series of group sessions on producing and editing copy. I also worked with employees who had limited writing experience on a one-to-one basis to improve their editorial ability.

Sep 2003 - Jun 2006

Associate Lecturer

Sheffield, United Kingdom

On a fixed contract, I worked in Hallam’s English department teaching creative writing to undergraduates. I wrote, planned and structured a 12-week programme across a range of modes, including the short story, scriptwriting, poetry and journalism. It was hugely rewarding and my first taste of creating a supportive, structured environment for writers.
