About Iain Matheson

Are you trying to turnaround or improve a challenging child welfare or youth justice service? Or tasked with building a new one?I am a qualified social worker and residential social worker by background. After gaining management experience across a range of child welfare/youth justice roles, I went on to become the New Zealand government’s senior leader for residential and foster care. As an independent consultant, I’ve since worked with key child welfare and youth justice government and non-government organisations in several countries including New Zealand, Australia. Fiji, Canada, and Scotland. A lifelong learner, my extensive experience is supported by several advanced academic and professional qualifications. I live near Wellington in New Zealand with my wife and our two slightly deranged setter dogs. In my spare time I like reading and travel, and a year ago became a runner!I help child welfare and youth justice organisations reduce and eliminate harm and improve children’s lives. In particular I work with leaders and experts with limited or complementary child welfare and youth justice subject-matter expertise, to help them address major service development challenges. These may arise from their own dissatisfaction, highly critical external reports, or ambitious, if vague, business cases. I help translate these into positive and concrete results for children by strengthening knowledge and understanding of child welfare and youth justice systems and complexity, ‘what works’ with challenges being overcome or strengths harnessed, and associated increases in relevant skills, and the application of child-focused values.Depending on whether your need is for advice, planning, facilitation, support, or quality assurance, my services include desk research and discovery, documents and reports, workshops, technical services, training and education, and mentoring and coaching. As such I work across all stages in the service development cycle:1. Problem definition2. Needs analysis3. Design4. Implementation5. Adjustments6. Results and reviewingIf you have a major child welfare or youth justice service development challenge, are committed to meaningfully changing lives for the better, and are open to working collaboratively with a peer, I can help you do a better job, with more confidence, at less cost, and with few if any avoidable mistakes that can so often lead to burn-out. Your work on this challenge could even turn out to be a career highlight. If that sounds like something worth talking about, do get in touch to arrange a no-obligation call.

Listed skills include Policy, Social Services, Government, Policy Analysis, and 46 others.
