Payload Scientist

Current

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

In mid-2020 I was part of a team of 12 undergrad students from Monash Nova Rover Team who designed and submitted a Lunar rover payload for NASA's 'Honey, I Shrunk the NASA Payload' competition. We are extremely honoured to have placed SECOND out of over 130 teams from around the world. Our challenge was to design a Lunar rover payload that weighed less than 0.4kg, was about the size of a soap bar, and could survive Lunar conditions for up to 30 days. The payload was required to collect valuable information about the Lunar surface in preparations for the upcoming sustained human presence on the Moon as part of the Artemis Program. The payload won a second place award and the team were invited to the next stage of the program - developing a proposal to NASA to build the payload. During the Christmas and New Year period of 2020-2021, we expanded our team to almost 20 members comprised of both Nova Rover members, and industry advisors from CSIRO Data61, Neumann Space and NASA. I worked alongside Daniel Ricardo and Xavier Andueza to develop a complete project plan and timeline to develop and three complete payloads in one year. Through liaising and working with the engineering teams, I developed a comprehensive Lunar environmental testing plan (temperature, radiation, static acceleration etc.), and success criteria for the prototype rover. Additionally, I helped design a 5 phase engineering timeline adapted from NASA's Systems Engineering Handbook. Our proposal was incredibly competitive for a student team - winning an Honourable mention and almost receiving seed funding to join the Artemis missions NASA Referee: Dr Andrew Shapiro, Technology Formulation at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology

Vice Lead / Scientist / Operations Lead

Melbourne, Australia

Nova Rover is a diverse student engineering and robotics team at Monash University with the goal of building a semi-autonomous, remotely-piloted Mars rover to compete in the international University Rover Challenge at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah. We are currently the only Australian team to have been accepted and placed 14th out of 96 international teams in our first year, then 9th in 2019. The team was founded two years ago, and has built three complete rovers in this time.As the Vice Lead of the team, I am responsible for overseeing and ensuring the success of 60 engineers and scientists working toward a common goal of building a Mars rover. This role includes managing long term goals, liaising with government and space industry, overseeing the development of the rover and the team's resources. Additionally, I conduct photography for promotional and external communications purposes with high end equipment, run the teams social media pages and liaise with our sponsors. During my time on the Science team I was responsible for the in-situ life detection devices and equipment on board the rover, and the process for detecting biosignatures in a Martian landscape. Being on the science team also involves conducting research for components outside our sub team and incorporating new technology.

Mar 2018 - May 2020

Teaching Associate

Clayton, Victoria, Australia

Teaching Associate for the 2nd year Astronomy and Astrophysics unit at Monash University. I helped prepare and run 3 hour, in-person lab sessions covering a diverse range of topics in the field of astronomy, including Photometry, Cepheids, Exoplanets and formal scientific report writing. We also ran an in-person observing night, teaching the students how to use a Dobsonian telescope. Other responsibilities include marking, responding to student questions and creating answer keys. Anonymous student feedback was excellent and can be provided upon request.

Supervisor

Australia

As a retail worker I engage face to face with customers, assisting them with products, orders, complaints and queries. I have become diverse in my skills and abilities through the years by undertaking shifts in various positions and departments available at several stores. I have experience in decanting and replenishing upwards of 30,000 products a day and hundreds of thousands of dollars of stock each week, as well as store stocktake, training new employees and teaching ‘the Kmart Way’ of a customer service oriented business, handling phone calls, holds, store transfers, laybys and disputes. Part of my job involved supervising up to or exceeding ten employees per day and instructing, leading and distributing work tasks to ensure performance standards are met.
