I was a tenured member of the Department of Physics until 2004.During a sabattical visit to the University of Toronto (visiting Professor, 2003) , where I was working with Prof. John C Polanyi, Nobel Laureate, I received a job offer to continue this work at Toronto University, which I accepted. I formally resigned from Newcastle in 2004, but I was delighted to act as scientific adviser to my last PhD student (Alan Hughes), who successfully defended his PhD thesis in July 2013.
