At first, it was like finding the perfect stage for my overly chatty, outgoing self—or as those fancy resume writers might put it, my "lively" working style. But soon enough, I realized that without a true sense of purpose in my role, burnout was lurking right around the corner. I know, I'm such a cliché.Time and again, I watched as perfectly qualified candidates got passed over because of outdated interview questions or, even worse, outdated mindsets. I didn't just find my voice; I became the voice. The pint-sized, "lively" recruiter started saying, "No, we can't do that," and was met with raised eyebrows and puzzled looks. I started asking, "What response are you expecting to hear?", "How is this information useful?", and the crowd favorite "How is this relevant to the position?". And slowly but surely, the gears began to turn.So, why recruiting? There is a moment in the selection process when a candidate who'd consistently been overlooked in their job search suddenly finds their confidence; finds their voice. The moment when they realize they are every bit as worthy as someone from a different part of town, someone with a different upbringing, or someone in an imbalanced/dominated industry. You can't miss it; you will know the moment when it happens—the nerves fade, the jittery sway comes to a calm, and a Duchenne smile appears like a badge of honor.There's no feeling quite like it. You might think the best part of recruiting is making the hire. No, for me, it's witnessing that moment when a candidate sits up straight, feeling proud of themselves, and recognizing the effort the hiring manager has put into making that moment possible.As a first-generation Mexican-American and proud English language learner, I have a personal stake in promoting diversity and fairness. So long story short, for me, that's why recruiting.
