Walmart Mexico Re-platform, Full StackI started leading the FE/BFF re-platform initiative, helping the Mexico engineering team adopting new technology platform/stack from the Walmart US team. Reviewing domain models, adopting GraphQL federation architecture in BFF layer (Apollo), adopting an Nx, Next.js based frontend mono-repo structure, inheriting cloud-native CD process. The project is challenging. I followed the inverse Conway maneuver in this meeting-heavy envisioning process.

During these years, I started doing more architecture planning for new projects. But I was always actively coding/code-reviewing because I believe that’s the best way to accelerate with the team. Mentoring junior developers and evangelizing best practices, because I belives in a self-learning organization. My projects during this time are Search and Browse API, Taxonomy API, Product Injection Pipeline, Search Guru (search curation tool), Search FE for Mexico GM, and Grocery.

Walmart Mexico Product-Innovation/Search team (walmart.com.mx, super.walmart.com.mx), Full StackThe first project is Algolia based instant search for Mexico general merchandise. From POC to production it only took two months. We started the A/B test right before the holiday traffic peak. Although the conversion rate is positive, due to corporate strategy we eventually canceled the experiment in 4 months. The main work for the instant search is data ingestion system, FE (backbone.js) integration and A/B testing setup with google optimize/analytic suite.The next project is Cloudinary based responsive image. I delivered the origin server upgrade, Cloudinary setup and wrote an in-house no-dependency version of the Cloudinary responsive image react component for the new FE team to leverage. The responsive image is a huge success due to the bandwidth-sensitive user-base in the Mexico market.The next year we started to grow the team building a new search system to replace the OOTB Oracle/Endeca-based search system. We first built a couple of measurement tools to track our search quality changes. We built an associates-operated NDCG (search precision scoring model) tool with Django, which finds under-perform search terms and quality differences between releases. Created an automated weekly google analytic report digest email with python to bring search quality awareness to business/engineering teams. I created a WYSIWYG search curation tool based on Django-DRF, start-react-app, and material-UI. Created a web app for monitoring, evaluating, and curating search results using the same UI customer use. We filed 4 patents on behalf of Walmart. And eventually, we moved the search backend system out of Endeca, building a new search system with Springboot, Solr, Redis, and Kafka. I integrated the new search system with a React-based FE codebase.

Join Walmart Grocery (grocery.walmart.com) team as 5th member. I built the first version of BFF REST service with express. Delivered it to production with automated zero-downtime deployment and monitoring. Worked with a tiny frontend team incrementally moving Java-Middleware/JSP-based Oracle/ATG monolithic to micro-service and SPA using Angular. Designed and implemented domain names split, solving routing, cookie, XHR difficulties in incremental migrations. Built a FE API stub tool with David Orchard which helped the team writing less flaky acceptance tests. Mentoring developers and QAs to write e2e angular.js tests with the protractor.Then the team started to rewrite the FE SPA to react + redux. We used flow type and other react libraries. I delivered registration flow and the core checkout experience. After incremental migrations, Walmart Grocery became the top growth area of Walmart’s online business portfolio. During the journey, we grow a pizza team to an engineering organization with close to a hundred engineers. I helped to interview team members in all engineering areas, running retrospectives, design meetings, etc. More functional FE stack did address pains in Angular. I was the go-to person for CDN, HTTP caching, load balancing, cookie magics (cross-domain, session stickiness), asset pipeline optimizing, FE PCI compliance, XSS preventing, FE DevOps.After a big reorg, I lost most of my FE colleagues in a Strategy-layoff. But then welcomed by a bigger (50+) frontend team from another org. Walmart Grocery FE went into another re-platform journey with react, electrode.io. Since it shared the same react and redux foundation, so I was doing knowledge transfer, mentoring, and leading some new initiatives with product managers. I helped to stabilize the FE delivery pipeline. Automating rolling deployment, PCI asset verification, and e2e tests scheduling with fabric (python). Provisioned the FE operation monitoring dashboard and alerts with Splunk.

I am a principal software developer in the Growth and Revenue team, our team is developing an internal platform and tools to support our first-party games. We develop REST services for games, services include the leaderboard, push notification, chat, etc. The back-end is in python powered by event and Flask, uses MongoDB, Redis, MySQL as datastore. At the front-end, we use nexus, a tool-chain powered by CoffeeScript, stylus, jade on node.js, running as a Single Page Application that is built with backbone.js and require.js. We deployed in AWS, the REST API isolation helps to scale the system with less complexity entropy. I’m a full-stack developer in this team, I'm involved both in front-end and server-side development.Start as a senior software developer.Been promoted as a lead software developer in July 2013.Been promoted as principal engineer in July 2014.

Open Party is a monthly IT community meetup (unconference), hold in Beijing. We start this event in January 2008, last 30+ episodes. It was one of the most influential unconferences in Beijing. In most of our meet-ups, there are 100+ people and 10+ topics, following unconference style. The core value of OP is providing a free opportunity for sharing and learning valuable ideas.

I joined OpenFeint as a senior web developer. OpenFeint is a leading game social platform (in competition with Apple’s game center). I was assigned as senior front-end developer of OpenFeint in May 2011, in charge of improving and maintain the WebUI technology stack and related projects. WebUI is a framework for developing mobile applications in CoffeeScript (javascript), sass (CSS), and HAML(HTML). It makes OpenFeint SDK cross-platform (iOS and Android) and has the ability to update over the air. OpenFeint is acquired by GREE (which is the largest SNS and game provider in Japan), we operate together now. I play a senior web developer role after the merge, and I’m also involved in skill training and agile coaching in the Beijing team.

After that period, we built a crawler system for our wap search system from scratch, and many other topic-driven crawlers for individual search systems. ThoughtWorks is a world-leading agile consulting company. I joined ThoughtWorks Studio which is a product studio building on-premise and SAAS software development tools. I joined the studio as a UI developer. And I was shared between Mingle and Cruise team. Mingle is an agile project management tool, it's based on JRuby on rails. Cruise is a continues-integration tool, we build the build pipeline dashboard by client-side MVC. We do TDD/DDD and pair programming every day. We used UI Mockup (lo-fi prototype) as a communication tool. We adopted progressive enhancement practice, make the lines between data/ structure/behavior clear, make sure logic is put in the right tier. I kept HTML5/CSS3 and other new technologies under my radar.Since I was jaded in Web technology, I was honored to be a member of ThoughtWorks China Technology Council (10 members total) taking charge of technology estimation and ensuring here.

I worked as a tech-lead in the Sina mail front-end team. We rewrite the old Sina mail system and adopt Ajax, which improves the user experience. The challenging part of this job is serving the web-based mail client for the users spread around our county under different browser and network conditions. The new Sina mail use prototype.js library, we focused on the readability and maintainability of this system, we used XHTML + CSS layout instead of tables and organized javascript in an OO way. We used Dojo in the Sina message system and used JST implemented MVC patterns. We did the regression test with Selenium RC, and we initiated the Selenium document translation program.
