Retirement!Writing And Editing Aug 2009 - PresentFaversham, KentHaving retired after nearly forty years of school-mastering I now write full-time. Recent publications include 'A Reader's Guide to Wuthering Heights' (Continuum), 'A Manner of Utterance, the poetry of J.H.Prynne' (Shearsman) and 'Contemporary Poetry since 1990' (Cambridge).'An Andrew Crozier Reader' appeared from Carcanet and I have published two new books of essays for Shearsman on Peter Hughes ('An Intuition of the Particular') and on Andrew Crozier ('Thrills and Frills'). This second Crozier volume brings back into the public domain the considerable amount of critical work produced over thirty years by Crozier. Shearsman Books has also published my edition of his PhD Thesis, 'Free Verse as Formal Restraint: an alternative to metrical conventions in twentieth century poetic structure.' I have become co-editor of SNOW and also write regular reviews for PN Review, The London Magazine & Golden Handcuffs Review. My translations of poems by Yves Bonnefoy have been published in Magma, Shearsman, Poetry Salzburg Review and Tears in the Fence and two volumes of these poems have been published by Oystercatcher Press. Oystercatcher has also published my translations of Ponge and Jaccottet. My edition of John Riley has now been published along with a Festschrift for Prynne's 80th birthday and a book about Dulwich College poets since 1950. In addition to critical writing I give talks at schools on the following areas of interest: French poetry, Flaubert, Camus, Dickens, 'Wuthering Heights', contemporary poetry. I have lectured on the work of Charles Dickens for the Prince of Wales Teaching Institute. My edition of the selected poems of Doug Oliver appeared last year; my translations of Mallarme, Valery & Baudelaire have appeared from Muscaliet Press & Two Rivers Press this year. My book on the teaching of English is now completed. -
