As someone who has worked across all three disciplines of medicine - clinical work, direct patient care, and laboratory research - Ian's interest for haematology was sparked early and continues to this day. Over the past five decades, he has witnessed and contributed to major changes and improvements in the field of haematology and oncology.Working with a team of dedicated healthcare professionals, Dr. Bunce has helped develop significant milestones, such as:→the development of the D Dimer test for diagnosing thrombosis→improving care for patients with acute leukaemia and other blood disorders by introducing private rooms, central venous access devices, and chemotherapy infusion pumps at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. With Radiologists helped develop new imaging techniques in diagnosis and staging of cancerHe helped to develop and establish apheresis services and lobbied for the creation of a bone marrow transplant unit at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, and aided the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland in raising funds for the construction of the unit.His experience in both public and private hospitals, as well as his co-founding of the Haematology and Oncology Clinics of Australasia (now Icon Cancer Centre) with two colleagues, earned him the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to medicine in 2009.Now, his focus is cooperating in developing with his son and a team of researchers, quantitative three dimensional digital images useful in medicine,livestock and other commercial areas.The idea behind 3D-Metrix came from a 'throw-away' comment about whether the scanner technology used on rock surfaces could also be applied to humans, and the answer was yes. With 3D-Metrix, we have the potential to significantly improve healthcare.When he is not working on healthcare innovations, Dr. Bunce enjoys spending time with his five grandchildren and learning new skills on his farm, which has kept him busy since 2002.
