Work with the School of Engineering and Materials Science to develop projects supporting the energy transition and contribute to the teaching activities of the school. I am currently co-supervising students in the area of geothermal drilling fluids and developing research projects in water treatment, especially the removal of polyfluorinated substances from drinking water.

Focusing on enjoying my freedom but also some academic connections

I am a visiting (Honorary) professor at the Institute of GeoEnergy Engineering at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. I interact with members of the institute and collaborate in the area of enhanced oil recovery and scale management. I teach a course on enhanced oil recovery (EOR) to the Petroleum Engineering Masters students.

I provided chemical input into technology projects across BP's Upstream business and developed chemical science capability within the technology organization to meet current needs and future demand.My expertise encompassed all areas of oilfield chemistry.

I managed the Chemical Sciences Centre of Expertise in BP's Upstream Technology Organisation. I was BP's advisor in chemical enhanced oil recovery technologies. I provided oversight of BP's waterflood-based research and development projects in chemical EOR and provided advice and technical support to BP's business units in the implementation and deployment of new enhanced oil technologies, especially low salinity water flooding. I also led our fundamental university-based research activities into wettability and surface chemistry.

I led a distributed team that spanned the breadth of BP linking scientists with an interest in all aspects of surface science. The aim was to promote and support surface science within BP as an underpinning, cross-cutting, scientific activity.

Managed technology projects focused on production chemistry, novel drilling fluids, fracturing fluids, cements and enhanced oil recovery. In particular I was involved with new technologies to deploy scale inhibitors and other production chemicals and technologies to increase pore scale displacement by wettability modification and improved reservoir sweep.
