I co-founded Hendriks & James Legal Translations in Amsterdam.Born and raised in Zimbabwe, I obtained a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London in 1976 after doing my A-levels. After living in London for a few years, I decided to continue my classical music education at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester in New York, where I graduated with a Master in Music in 1986. For the next twenty years I was active in the classical music scene, performing and touring as a solo and chamber musician. In 1991 I moved to the Netherlands, where for many years I worked with various orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. At a certain point I was asked whether I would be interested in translating a short book about the 17C Dutch settlement on the island of Dejima in Nagasaki bay. It was a fascinating project and I took on a number of other translations that were offered to me. Being a musician, the obvious first step was to approach various organisations in the Dutch music world. For some time I translated programme notes for concerts and CD booklets as well as articles for journals etc. In 1999 I decided to make translation my main professional activity. It is obvious to any alert English speaker living in the Netherlands that a great deal of material covering every possible topic is translated into English. I was also keen to break out of the confines of the music world and I happened to find out about Chris Odijk's outstanding one-year course in legal translation. I completed that course which, apart from anything else, was an excellent introduction to the structure of Dutch society. For some time after that I translated legal documents for various agencies. I also acquired a number of regular commercial clients for whom I worked for several years. Around that time I had the good fortune to meet Nynke, who was also working as a legal translator. She came up with the logical idea of pooling forces and together setting up an agency specialised in legal translations from Dutch to English and vice versa. That was in 2002. We have now been working together for 18 years and Hendriks & James now serves a wide range of leading law firms. In 2016 and 2017, we translated the Copyright Act and the General Data Protection Regulation Implementation Act in collaboration with two law firms. These publications have been issued in book form by Uitgeverij de Lex. They are also posted on our website.
