About Ian Lumsden

I'm a fourth year PhD student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, concentrating in High-Performance Computing. My research mostly involves tooling to enhance scientific computing applications/workflows and application performance data collection and analysis. I'm a huge fan of all aspects of software development, but I'm especially interested in scientific workflows, high-performance computing, and data-driven software development.

Ian Lumsden Work Experience Details
  • Global Computing Laboratory
    Graduate Research Assistant
Global Computing Laboratory Aug 2020 - Present
    Knoxville, Tennessee, Us
Performing research in high performance computing under Dr. Michela Taufer. Working with collaborators at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on developing novel techniques to identify causes of interesting performance phenomena in High-Performance Computing applications using Hatchet. Also working on another project in collaboration with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on helping scientific computing workflows transition from traditional execution approaches to in situ approaches with minimal code refactoring.
  • Global Computing Laboratory
    Undergraduate Research Assistant
Global Computing Laboratory May 2019 - Jul 2020
    Knoxville, Tennessee, Us
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
    Summer Graduate Computing Student Intern
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory May 2023 - Aug 2023
    Livermore, Ca, Us
Developed an approach to automatically detect all accessible levels of the storage hierarchy and model it as a bipartite graph. Integrated this approach into LLNL's Dynamic and Asynchronous Data Streamliner (DYAD) tool. Finally, Improved the structure and performance of DYAD and the test suite developed during the previous summerMentors: Dr. Jae-Seung Yeom, Dr. Hariharan Devarajan
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
    Summary Graduate Student Intern
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory May 2022 - Aug 2022
    Livermore, Ca, Us
Augmented the workflow framework from the Analytics4MD project to make use of a tool from LLNL that enables scientific computing workflows to migrate from a traditional, sequential execution model to an in situ, parallel model with little to no code refactoring. Also, created a test suite for this LLNL tool based on (currently synthetic) workflows from the Analytics4MD project. Finally, examined the performance of this LLNL tool using our test suite and using LLNL's performance data collection tool PerfFlow AspectMentor: Dr. Jae-Seung Yeom
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
    Summer Graduate Computing Student Intern
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Jun 2021 - Aug 2021
    Livermore, Ca, Us
Developed a data analysis workflow that uses profiles of LLNL’s MARBL multi-physics simulation tool to predict what compiler MARBL should be built with to get the best performance for a particular simulation workload.Mentors: Dr. Olga Pearce, Dr. Stephanie Brink
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
    Summer Undergraduate Computing Student Intern
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory May 2020 - Aug 2020
    Livermore, Ca, Us
Designed and implemented a new graph-based filtering query language for the Hatchet data analysis tool to enable relationship-based analysis of profiling data. Used this query language to perform novel analysis of the performance of different MPI calls in HPC benchmark applications.I presented this work at the ACM Student Research Competition at the annual Supercomputing (SC) conference, where it won the 1st place award in the Undergraduate category.Mentors: Dr. Stephanie Brink, Dr. Abhinav Bhatele, Dr. Olga Pearce, Dr. Todd Gamblin
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory
    Here Intern
Oak Ridge National Laboratory May 2017 - Dec 2018
    Oak Ridge, Tn, Us
Worked as a HERE Intern in the Neutron Data Analysis group at ORNL. I worked on multiple different projects (see the Projects section) related to analyzing the data produced with the instruments at the Spallation Neutron Source.
