I am a senior manager at Sparcraft Masts South Africa, the country's leading mast manufacturer. With 22 years of specialised experience in mast and rig components manufacturing, I bring valuable expertise in production, design, sales, and operations. As a versatile manager, I handle diverse responsibilities encompassing design, operations, project management, and business development. My key focus is on customer interactions, understanding their needs, and translating them into effective design and production processes. My passion for spars and rigging developed during my early years of sailing, starting with dinghies and progressing to keelboats. Upon joining Sparcraft Masts after completing school, I gained extensive knowledge by working on the factory floor and learning from mast building legends in South Africa. Over time, my roles evolved from production support to quality assurance, quotes and costings management, and ultimately project management. I also expanded my expertise through training and process observations at Southern Spars in New Zealand. After Southern Spars closed its South African operations in 2017, I partnered with Tich Mitchell to establish the new iteration of Sparcraft Masts. Under our leadership, we successfully built aluminum masts for both local and international boat building yards. Over the past 4.5 years, I have played a crucial role in growing Sparcraft Masts' business significantly and introducing the production of carbon masts. My deep understanding of spars, rigging, and their design and function stems from my passion for sailing. Since leaving school, I have been extensively involved in sailing activities, including local keelboat racing and participating in renowned events like the Antigua Week Regattas, Cowes Week, and the Cape to Salvador South Atlantic Yacht Race. I have also completed various shorter local distance races, contributed to the winning Lipton Cup Team, received provincial sailing honors, and competed in the Hobie Tiger and Fireball Worlds. I thoroughly enjoy sailing both keelboats and dinghies.Through my tenure in the industry, I have fostered strong relationships with South African boat builders in Cape Town, Knysna, St Francis, and Durban, as well as private boat owners and international yards in Mauritius and beyond. Additionally, I have maintained enduring connections with colleagues in European and New Zealand mast manufacturing businesses, collaborating with them as needed. These relationships enable seamless cooperation and knowledge sharing.
