I am a Professor at the University of Worcester and teach on the Geography and Environmental Management and Sustainability degrees. My teaching & research interests are in Interdisciplinary River Science, Sustainable Water Management, Natural Flood Management (NFM) and Nature-Based Solutions to combat the effects of climate change, Conservation Agriculture, and the use of drones for environmental monitoring. I have a passion for fieldwork, labwork and computer practicals (teaching & research), environmental monitoring & mountains. My teaching is characterised by three key features, i.e. 1) the integration of practical work, especially fieldwork, labwork and computer practicals for skills development and to enhance student employability, 2) research-informed teaching, and 3) working with students as academic partners for the development of new and engaging learning and teaching resources. I endeavour to make module content experiential, relevant to real-word issues and the workplace (through fieldwork, labwork and the use of virtual reality with 360° video) and promote deep-learning and student engagement. I've had a UK Civil Aviation Authority approved Remote Pilot Qualification – small (RPQ-s) since 2011. I've flown the University's drones for research in the UK, Chile, Switzerland and Slovenia. I am a member of the Sustainable Environments Research Group & am always keen to explore opportunities for new collaborations, consultancy and project ideas, especially with engineers and aquatic ecologists. I have extensive project management experience including writing tenders, appointing staff, planning and managing multiple concurrent projects and assigning staff workloads, data analysis and report writing.My primary research roles are postgraduate research supervision in Physical Geography and Environmental Science and carrying out and project managing funded research contracts. I supervise numerous PhD students and MRes in River Science students and have a 100% track record for successful completions of my PhD students. The main focus of my research is on developing methods for i) measuring, mapping and monitoring the hydromorphology of streams and understanding how this influences habitat hydraulics and ii) the use of drones for ultra-high resolution remote sensing of river morphology, the measurement of river velocity and river discharge, and to quantify soil erosion for conservation agriculture and NFM.
