About Ian Roper
I am an experienced education and athletic professional with a diverse background in counseling, athletic administration, and coaching. My career spans several institutions where I have taken on significant roles that demonstrate my leadership, organizational, and mentoring skills.As a counselor, I have implemented developmentally appropriate comprehensive guidance programs for grades spanning pre-kindergarten through high school. I am a strong student advocate who works hard to remove barriers to academic success while helping all students find their path forward to the next chapter in their journey. I am a member of the 2024 Kenan Fellows cohort comprised of 37 of the top education professionals in North Carolina. I have a passion for continued professional growth so I can best serve my students.My coaching experience is extensive and includes experience as a head coach in five different sports. In track and field, my programs have won seven NCHSAA state championships and fourteen conference championships. I have been recognized as Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High Schools (2021) and also as the North Carolina Coach of the Year eight separate times. I started the inaugural wrestling program at Topsail High School in 2001 and the inaugural girls wrestling program at Swain County High School in 2019. As a head coach I have amassed a career record of 348-93, which ranks 19th North Carolina history.Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to fostering student growth both academically and athletically, and my extensive experience in counseling, athletic administration, and coaching has equipped me with the skills necessary to support and enhance both educational and athletic programs effectively.
