With over a decade of experience at the intersection of technology, education, and innovation, I am passionate about leveraging emerging technologies to create transformative learning experiences and unlock new possibilities in research. As the Director of Design and Innovation at Brandeis University, I lead a dedicated team managing multiple maker spaces, including the MakerLab, Automation Lab, Digital Scholarship Lab, Printer Farm, and Engineering Classroom. Our mission is to integrate cutting-edge technologies into the curriculum and across the research enterprise, fostering an environment of experiential learning and digital literacy.In addition to my administrative role, I am an adjunct professor at the Brandeis International Business School and a lecturer in the Engineering and Anthropology departments. My courses focus on human-centered design, rapid prototyping, and the ethical implications of technology in a social context. I am committed to guiding students through hands-on projects that emphasize mistake-driven learning, the iterative design process, and rapid prototyping. I believe in the mantra: "No prototype, no meeting."Throughout my career, I have given talks and published extensively on topics such as 3D scanning, drone racing, and the role of emerging technologies in higher education. My technical expertise spans the makerspace toolsets of CAD/CAM and fabrication, electronics prototyping, design and entrepreneurship methodology, computer hardware, research technologies, and public speaking, with certifications ranging from FAA sUAS Remote Pilot to Apple Certified Macintosh Technician.My work extends beyond academia. As a board member of Racial Justice x Tech Policy and the Weston Art & Innovation Center, I advocate for equitable access to technology and innovative solutions to societal challenges. I also contribute to e-NABLE, promoting the use of open-source hardware in education. I am driven by the belief that technology can empower individuals and communities to create a more equitable and sustainable future for everyone driven by non-zero sum thinking. I believe that diversity is the solution to complexity and that it will take the myriad of human experience to see around corners and solve the problems of the next century. My approach is to "make to think, and think to make," ensuring that every step taken, even with failures, is a calculated move towards improvement.I advocate for a work environment where fun is not the opposite of work. Work should be enjoyable-and the best reward for good work is more, better work.

To address the University's growing need to embed technology and digital literacies in learning goals, BDI provides services that faculty can adopt for class and research usage and students can engage in experiential learning inside and outside of the classroom. The BDI team manages several maker spaces at Brandeis University: The MakerLab, The Automation Lab, the Digital Scholarship Lab, the Printer Farm, and the Engineering Classroom. Our services include support of CAD and CAM workflows around Digital Fabrication , 3D scanning (structured light, photogrammetry, LIDAR), data visualization, GIS and mapping, XR (Unity and Unreal development), machine learning, robotics prototyping, drone use (designing, building, FAA 107 and international licensing), embedded systems prototyping (Raspberry Pi, Arduino, soldering) and design ideation tools essential to entrepreneurship. BDI specializes in the technical aspects, but also importantly in the policy and political implications of implementing emerging technologies on campus.BDI will continue to work with university stakeholders and industry leaders to evolve services to meet the changing needs of the research and learning needs on campus. We support tools at the edge of digital technologies and design to fabrication workflows so that the Brandeis community can better effect their built environments and build a more equitable, sustainable, and accessible future. -

When I was an undergraduate here starting in 2001, I would mod computers in my dorm room. Assemble and overclock components, cut custom windows and spray paint the cases back when you could only buy beige boxes. And I found other people who would hold up in their dorms and work on similar projects. There is an entrepreneurial spirit here, but we don't have an engineering program. We are pragmatic dreamers; innovators with an outside-the-box question-everything mentality, with extreme respect for human rights and equal access, passionate about enabling all humans. And For the first time in human history, there is a digital fabrication toolset available that caters to this, allowing users to skip the engineering-training gap and go straight from concept to creation. These tools enable you to focus on design and iteration. Make, Break, Remake is one of our mottos in the MakerLab. Don't be afraid to fail. Fail faster and fail smarter.Our goal is to build a community centered place to bring those people to work on projects and cross pollinate in an ask-the-room setting of local experts. The contribution and engagement this enables is new and extremely empowering (to both the individual and to the potential for humanity).Access, Autonomy, and Mastery is another thing we try to give people - those three things are, to me, the most important motivators. Technology Evangelist.In the Spring of 2013, I did the initial infrastructure purchase, specification, and build out of the Research Technology Department within LTS. This is a community building project, but there is a focus on bringing desktop style break-fix support to instrument workstations and servers controlling research technology such as DNA sequencing machines, electron and laser microscopes, additive and reductive manufacturing machines (anything g-code driven), NMR spectrometers, and HPC hardware (supercomputer).Research Technology support at Brandeis also touches digital forensics and security tools, institutional storage of big or toxic data, Data recovery and destruction, Cloud collaboration and backup in a research context, and many of the new toolsets in the Maker community, including support of touch and gesture inputs, 3D printing, 3D scanning, and prototyping with embedded systems (Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and Electronic IMP, etc). With efforts to discover, advance and mainstream support of researcher's workflows by facilitating vendor contact and troubleshooting of unique software and hardware required for research.We work with artists, scientists and innovators across the disciplines to bolster the technological hurdles they encounter in their research workflows, top to bottom and are constantly running local pilots in new technologies to address their needs.
