At C8 MediSensors we are nearing the official release of a truly revolutionary medical device, one that will combine the measurement capability of complex laboratory equipment with the size, cost and usability of miniature consumer electronics. In a single blood glucose measurement we deliver several quintillion (10^18) photons to the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Of the roughly ten million photons that are collected by our sensor from of fluorescence emission and Raman scattering, just a few thousand arise from glucose and can be used in our measurements. To develop miniaturized battery-powered spectrometers capable of resolving small blood glucose changes despite this spectacularly low signal to background ratio, we have been forced to adapt beyond conventional calibration and testing techniques.As Instrument Analysis Lead I manage the development and deployment of algorithms for glucometer calibration and test, the mining and distillation of large test data sets into meaningful metrics and device quality predictions, and the integration of these analytical methods into practical automated tools for use throughout the company. I am also the point of contact between analysis engineering and several other groups including process engineering, quality assurance and reliability, and optical systems engineering. Constant communication and rapid iterations of constructive feedback are keys to success in this context. In any given week I may spend one day developing and deploying new instrument calibration algorithms for use in R&D and manufacturing, another day applying the tools of chemometrics to vast in vivo data sets, a few hours debugging C++ instrument control code, an afternoon mining device test results from SQL and providing feedback metrics to manufacturing, a few evenings working on automated data flow tools to aid process improvement, and the balance of time communicating these developments to scientists, engineers and managers throughout the company.

Lectured and prepared original course material for Occidental College's chemistry course sequence for sophomore- and junior-year majors in chemistry and biology.Maintained an optical microscopy research platform and trained undergraduate research students in the use of contemporary fluorescence techniques for characterizing neuronal defects in transgenic strains of C. elegans expressing fluorescent axon markers.

Graduate research focused on photophysical properties of semiconductor quantum dots, single-molecule microscopy of fluorescently labeled biomolecules, and fabrication of carbon nanotube AFM probes.
