First started work with Bailey Johnson as a labourer and was soon offered a position as a ceiling fixer after a year in the role became responsible for an apprentice. A hard working nature and an ability to overcome unusual problems often led to being given the tasks that were somewhat unusual or required exact precision. These included a ceiling in the shape of a funnel at the top of the stair case and a hermetically sealed ceiling in the surgical theatres at York hospital.
