About Ian Welle

I am an energetic, hard working, environmentally focused Mechanical Engineer. Through my engineering experience working in the areas of refrigeration, energy analysis, HVAC design, project management, manufacturing, and bio-medical/robotic design, I have gained a good understanding of the different areas of engineering and how it is important to consider a wide variety of design constraints to produce the best final product. Through this experience, I have learned how to interpret the client's needs and turn these needs into a final product. I have also learned the best product is produced by working in a team environment, where different people with different expertise can work together to produce a product which meets the engineering requirements but also looks and performs great!I believe that any company can operate safely and environmentally while still turning a profit. I also believe that everyone should give back to the communities they live in. For this reason, I volunteer and co-run a homeless food program and have also worked over-seas in a Nigerian orphanage constructing new buildings and a water supply system.I am an avid outdoors man and enjoy rock climbing, mountaineering and spear fishing; I also enjoy cooking and playing a riff or two on my guitar.

Ian Welle Work Experience Details
  • Polar Engineering
    Principal Engineer
Polar Engineering Jun 2019 - Present
    Victoria Canada
At Polar Engineering I specialize in the engineering of industrial refrigeration systems, by providing the most cost-effective reliable refrigeration systems on the market. To keep in front of market tends, I have become an expert in the design, integration, and commissioning of CO2 refrigeration systems. This said, no refrigerant is right for every application. Therefore, I am also very comfortable with ammonia and Freon. Working in this market, I enjoy working with my clients to leverage grants making their capital investment go even further. Summing everything up, I enjoy taking clients through the entire engineering process starting at initial contact, through the engineering process, and finally to plant commissioning.
  • Accent Refrigeration Systems Ltd
    Principal Engineer
Accent Refrigeration Systems Ltd Apr 2014 - Jun 2019
    Victoria Canada
At Accent Refrigeration my job is to make sure all the balls stay up in the air. This means in a single day I may work with clients to insure that the end product meets the clients needs, engineer a new type of energy system using sea water for a energy source, work with local governments across the globe making sure the green design meets current standards and regulations, and finish the day off working with my hands in the shop making sure all projects stay on schedule. Later on at night I will use my project management experience and skills to layout time lines, coordinating each trade making sure every project, either design or construction, is completed on time and on budget. In the last year I have worked on and managed projects worth over a million dollars and also been able to work with Art Sutherland, Accent's owner/president, to design green energy systems pushing the refrigeration industry one step further.
  • Wd, A Western Digital Company
    Advanced Manufacturing Intern
Wd, A Western Digital Company Sep 2013 - Dec 2013
    Bangkok, Thailand
My main responsibilities in this internship were to provide robotic designs for hard drive assembly lines in Thailand. Using Solidworks I designed parts making sure to minimize manufacturing costs and assembly line downtime. To do this, I became an expert in Solidworks utilizing the design experience I gained working for Spin and Teck, and the manufacturing experience I gained working for the University of Victoria. At WD I was the engineering lead on the design for an robotic hand for the SCARA assembly line which required me to be resourceful and use things such as cardboard cut outs and 3D printing to perform inexpressive but effective R&D. Working for Western Digital, I gained respect for other cultural values, expertise in Solidworks, knowledge about clean room design, and also learned how to use the resources around me to provide timely and cost effective design solutions.
  • University Of Victoria
    Machine Shop Intern
University Of Victoria Jan 2013 - Apr 2013
    Victoria
Working for the University of Victoria in the Mechanical Engineering Machine Shop, I gained hundreds of hours of experience designing and manufacturing parts on both manual and CNC lathes and mills. During this internship, I gained extensive experience designing jigs and fixturing methods to insure the parts were produced in the most efficient way possible. I also used the CAD CAM program, Master CAM, and an Anilam controller to produce the G code required to manufacture parts. Using these programs I learned how to write and correct G code, ensuring the safe and time efficient operation of the CNC machines.
  • Teck Resources Limited
Demolitions, Hvac And Project Management Intern
Teck Resources Limited May 2012 - Aug 2012
Working for Teck Metals, I oversaw 9 different projects ranging in value from $100,000.00 to $7,000,000.00, where I managed both tradesmen and engineering consultant firms. These projects required me to take upper management ideas to produce a high level engineering designs and estimates for projects such as a hazardous material size reduction plant. To make this estimate, I designed the plant, taking into account space constraints, the HVAC system (including a baghouse), worker ergonomics and current WSBC regulations.I also worked in the demolitions department prioritizing sites and writing demolition work scopes taking into account project deadlines while at all times maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Spin
    Biomedical Design Intern
    Spin Aug 2010 - Sep 2011
    Victoria, Canada
Working for SPIN utilizing an NSERC grant, I was hired to design and manufacture a mechanical propulsion system for a wheel chair, taking into account ergonomics and constraints found through research from everyday wheelchair users. To design this propulsion system, I used SoildWorks and Cosmos (FEA analysis) to design and test a 3D model of the wheel chair and design components.
  • Kiewit
Paving And Earth Works Project Management Intern
    Kiewit Sep 2010 - Aug 2011
    Vancouver, Canada Area
Working for Kiewit, I was involved with project management of the Paving and Earthworks Departments. Working in these departments, I had the opportunity to oversee a crew of 15 workers, working on a tight deadline and budget, constructing Highway #1, while making sure that a safe work environment was maintained at all times. Working for Kiewit, I also had to opportunity to manage the geotechnical engineering company PGL, which surveyed the work site for road way contamination.
