In transforming this 130-year old manufacturing company into a modern, profitable business, Ifocused to a great degree on the growing fields of CHP Plants and Renewable Energy. Iacquired and brought to market new technologies: Packaged Medium-Scale CHP plants, WindTurbines and Marine energy technologies; also building on the company’s existing vastexpertise with steam turbine systems for Biomass and Energy-from-Waste but moving from the<15MW market to the c.30MW – a significant step change. Also illustrative of this period was amove into ‘turnkey’ plant design, an example being a 12MWe steam-cycle CHP plant fired bycoke-oven gas which included: boiler (with feed water treatment and feed pump), coke-ovengas compressor, extraction-condensing steam turbine, condenser and vacuum system,electrical generator and switchgear, whole plant control system, emissions controls, all civilengineering and buildings work, as well as full process integration with the coking plant.

I was responsible for all aspects of the Company start-up, development of several BusinessPlans, 3-, 5- and 10-year forecasts, negotiations with potential investors including VentureCapital companies, Trade Investors, LECs, Regional and Local Government bodies. As ManagingDirector, I was responsible for the overall operation of the Company, and specifically thecompany's forward strategy, identifying market opportunities, particularly in environmentalengineering, and for making technical presentations to potential customers. I personallynegotiated and executed contracts for several large gas compressor packages for "blue-chip"customers, including BP, Zeneca, AHS Emstar, ABB, EGT & Weir Group. I set up a networked PCsystem, incorporating word and data processing, CAD and CAE; developed a PLC-basedcompressor control system which was the most advanced in the industry; was responsible fornegotiating agency, distribution and/or packaging agreements, on a Strategic Alliance basis,with several large international manufacturing companies; achieved full accreditation to ISO9001 within 2½ years of Company start-up. As Technical Director, I had full responsibility forall design engineering, manufacturing, site installation and commissioning.

I was responsible to the Chief Executive of the James Howden Group for the operation andprofitability of the Craigton, Scotland and Bloomfield, Connecticut facilities; I had full P+Lresponsibility for all aspects of the company. During my tenure the company was transformedfrom a traditional, conservative, loss-making operation into a profitable, innovative, internationallycompetitive enterprise. This turnaround was achieved in part by becoming theworld’s leading supplier of fuel gas compressors for CCGT and CHP plants worldwide, especiallyin the field of landfill gas conditioning and compression for North America.

was responsible for setting up a new Compressor & Turbine Group for North America,including regional sales and marketing, system design and project management of the MANGHHCompressor and Turbine product lines, reporting directly to the President of theCorporation. During this period, I was involved in the ‘concept-to-commissioning’ projectmanagement of several ground-breaking installations, including the USA’s first commercialscale coal gasification plant (at Beulah, North Dakota) and the first commercial extraction ofoil-from-tar sands at Mildred Lake, Alberta.

For specific accounts I was responsible for all aspects of sales, marketing, applications andcontract engineering of MAN-GHH compressors and turbines for the chemical, petrochemical,refining and steel industries, and for purchasing major auxiliary equipment in the UK (motors,generators, oil systems). In 1979, I sold and project managed the first-ever MAN-GHH oilfloodedscrew compressor for use with process gas in a refinery application.

My work included design and selection procedures for MAN-GHH axial, centrifugal and screwcompressors, steam and gas turbines, material selection, plant facilities and costing methods,working on several major proposals for European installations.

I was responsible for machine selection, performance calculations, material selection, pricing,customer integration and field support for Delaval steam turbines, centrifugal compressors andpumps. Major projects were for steam turbine generators for early EfW plants, including somewith district heating schemes

Four-year student apprenticeship in all aspects of manufacture of steam turbines for electricaland mechanical drive, reciprocating compressors, pumps, gearboxes and textile machineryculminating with personally building a 1000kW steam turbine generator with integralcondenser. After filling various production engineering roles, I moved into steam turbineapplications, estimating and design for a variety of biomass CHP and waste recovery plantsinternationally. I received 1972 Chairman's Award for best student completing training.
