Projects included improve the Skype audio experience in Lumia phones starting from Lumia 930, surround sound recording, improving the Cortana experience.

Lumia Audio management team member based on West Coast representing the team in Finland to provide technical expertise and support locally for the San Diego programs, Qualcomm and Microsoft. Responsible for the project management and delivery of the audio hardware and software solutions from Lumia Audio and suppliers for products from San Diego including Lumia 928 and Lumia Icon. During the concept phase introduce new audio technologies such as world class audio recording in stereo and Dolby 5.1 by utilising 4 HP mics. Provide cost savings by innovative solutions without affecting the user experience. During execution manage the SW deliverables from Finland and manage the errors including collaboration with Qualcomm audio team. Support the local programs development, lab entry, successful launch and in-market phases.In 2011 set up a new way of working in collaboration with Qualcomm and Microsoft, as well as with relevant Nokia teams in both USA and Finland to manage the audio experiences on Lumia products from San Diego.Responsible for the audio in Lumia 800, Lumia 710, Lumia 610 & Lumia 900 and ensuring that they launched on time with very high audio quality.

Responsible for audio in a new Symbian chipset, both the low level audio software and the end to end audio quality. I set up and run the project which required extensive collaboration with STE and the complete audio team covered 6 Nokia, 3 STE sites, totalling about 100 engineers. Engineering Manager for audio processing algorithm development and implementation, with teams in UK and Finland with an annual budget of $3 million. Research team developed world class enhancement algorithms for speech, audio playback and audio recording. Development team owned the integration of the algorithms and the audio hardware driver which controlled the audio codec, microphones, vibra, earpiece, speaker and HAC coil. The development team utilised Agile/Scrum methodologies. This role required significant strategy work mainly related to audio quality, audio tuning, and subcontracting. To manage the team workload and costs a subcontracting team was formed in India to handle asset maintenance.Successes included the launch of HD Voice (AMR-WB) in Europe, stereo audio capture as featured in N8, and the launch of Nokia’s 2 mic beam forming noise cancellation technology.

Engineering Manager for Audio DSP including audio telephony, audio playback and audio hardware drivers, which was common for S40 & S60. Line management, project management and cost management activities were included. I was also the audio feature responsible for AMR-WB. The team delivered an improved music playback experience with significantly better audio quality and audio playback time.Engineering Manager for developing multimedia software. The Audio Codec Centre team delivered audio and speech codecs to all Nokia units, independent of being ARM or DSP based, to ensure quality and cost effectiveness. Video Enhancements delivered to S60 products, Voice UI delivered for S40. Project Manager of Audio DSP team with Voice Recognition, Music Player and speech call. Delivered to Nokia’s first 3G product. OMAP and OSE DSPs. Music player included MIDI, MP3, AAC.Team Leader responsible for the Audio DSP for Nokia’s first 3G phone, using RTOS (OSE). Product Program interface and responsible for the system integration of the audio DSP. Responsible for quality in DSP Line and developed the SW process.

Responsible for implementing, integrating and field testing PDC-EFR speech codecs. Secondment to Japan as Field Test Team Manager for HDA25, leading 25 cross functional engineers. Field Test Team leader in Japan with 10 people. Planning, resource management and error management.Development of Voice Memo for Japanese phones. The design, implementation, and integration of the DSP solution. Field testing in Japan with responsibility for all DSP issues, including PDC-HR codec and the Layer 1 task. Provided technical support for type approval and customer sample submission. Quality and focus were key for NTT DoCoMo. As DSP Engineer implemented and integrated the PDC-FR speech codec on a TI DSP. This involved writing a fixed point simulation and then a hand-coded assembler version. Implemented VAD and an echo canceller (AEC).
