I am a Senior Director in the optical modem development team at Ciena, and have been deeply involved in all of Ciena’s WaveLogic coherent modem product introductions during my 14-year tenure. I am also a Ciena Distinguished Engineer (2014). I have been active at the OIF since 2007 and served on the OIF Board of Directors for six years, including the position of President Oct. 2020- Oct. 2021. I have recently been re-elected to the OIF board for a 2 year term (Oct. 2022-Oct. 2024.) For 10 years, prior to joining Ciena, I guided InP Mach-Zehnder modulator component development at Nortel and then Bookham, to commercial success. I have a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Waterloo, and a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Queen's University.PUBLICATIONS AND INVITED CONTRIBUTIONS• More than 25 peer reviewed conference and journal papers with greater than 300 citations.• 18 US patents• Editor for the CFP2-ACO Implementation Agreement at the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF)• Chapter 7: Indium Phosphide-Based Electro-Optic Modulators (34 pages) in “Broadband Optical Modulators: Science, Technology, and Applications [Hardcover]”, Antao Chen (Editor), Edmond Murphy (Editor), CRC Press, Nov. 16 2011, ISBN-13: 978-1439825068. • Won competitive NCIT, "Under 40" Award for Researchers in Photonics, 2005.

Senior Electro-Optic Device DesignerBookham Oct 2002 - Feb 2007Us• Technical leader for chip development and new product introduction on Bookham’s flagship InP Mach-Zehnder modulator platform. Defined and led the evolution of the platform through three design iterations, two platform iterations, and a wafer foundry transfer.• Directed a group of 4 Ph. D. electro-optic device designers on two continents. Operated remotely from the wafer foundry for project leadership and device design, on programs with timeframes of up to 2 years.• Design authority for the successful fabrication transfer of the InP MZ 3” chip platform from Ottawa, Canada to Caswell, England in 2002/2003. Completed on-time and in budget.• MZ R&D programs have delivered the lowest reported optical insertion losses, made possible full C or L band tunable operation, added new integrated on-chip functionality [InGaAs optical power taps, optical imbalance control, VOA function, chirp control] and provided substantial cost reductions through yield improvement and build simplification.• Designed and realized the successful monolithic integration of a full C-band tunable laser with an InP MZ modulator for negative chirp 10Gb/s operation.• Site visits with Tier 1 optical system vendors as technical expert support to product line managers and sales/marketing. Participate in product specification negotiations with customers. -
Electro-Optic Device DesignerNortel Advanced Optical Components Jun 1997 - Oct 2002Ca• Spearheaded campaign to create the 10Gb/s Compact MZ product line. Delivered the initial required InP MZ chip in-feed on a new process platform in less than 1 year.• Played key role in the team that defined business strategy for optical modulators in 2002.• Guided an established 2.5Gb/s MZ product through Nortel’s first transfer from a 2” to 3” process line simultaneous with design improvements to realize significant cost reductions (>25%.)• Originated, designed, and developed selective-area growth based optical spot-size converters for strongly-guided waveguides, a 40Gb/s electro-absorption modulator, a 40Gb/s waveguide P-i-N detector, and an InP based high-speed cross-connect optical switch.• Extensive experience with InP based optical component design, advanced III-V fabrication and growth techniques, reticle layout, and optical component test methodologies [optical, RF.] -
