• Nortel/Ciena PLL representative at the Optical Internetworking Forum [2009-present.] Made significant contributions to the 100G component implementation agreements [uITLA, QPMZ, ICR]

Served on the OIF Board of Directors for six years (3 consecutive 2 year elections), including the position of President between October 2020-2021.

Delivering high quality electro-optics solutions for new hardware and system requirements

• Technical leader for chip development and new product introduction on Bookham’s flagship InP Mach-Zehnder modulator platform. Defined and led the evolution of the platform through three design iterations, two platform iterations, and a wafer foundry transfer.• Directed a group of 4 Ph. D. electro-optic device designers on two continents. Operated remotely from the wafer foundry for project leadership and device design, on programs with timeframes of up to 2 years.• Design authority for the successful fabrication transfer of the InP MZ 3” chip platform from Ottawa, Canada to Caswell, England in 2002/2003. Completed on-time and in budget.• MZ R&D programs have delivered the lowest reported optical insertion losses, made possible full C or L band tunable operation, added new integrated on-chip functionality [InGaAs optical power taps, optical imbalance control, VOA function, chirp control] and provided substantial cost reductions through yield improvement and build simplification.• Designed and realized the successful monolithic integration of a full C-band tunable laser with an InP MZ modulator for negative chirp 10Gb/s operation.• Site visits with Tier 1 optical system vendors as technical expert support to product line managers and sales/marketing. Participate in product specification negotiations with customers.

• Spearheaded campaign to create the 10Gb/s Compact MZ product line. Delivered the initial required InP MZ chip in-feed on a new process platform in less than 1 year.• Played key role in the team that defined business strategy for optical modulators in 2002.• Guided an established 2.5Gb/s MZ product through Nortel’s first transfer from a 2” to 3” process line simultaneous with design improvements to realize significant cost reductions (>25%.)• Originated, designed, and developed selective-area growth based optical spot-size converters for strongly-guided waveguides, a 40Gb/s electro-absorption modulator, a 40Gb/s waveguide P-i-N detector, and an InP based high-speed cross-connect optical switch.• Extensive experience with InP based optical component design, advanced III-V fabrication and growth techniques, reticle layout, and optical component test methodologies [optical, RF.]
