The Asian Financial Forum (AFF) brings together some of the most influential members of the global financial and business community to discuss developments and trends in the dynamic markets of Asia.

As President and CEO of the Investment Industry Association of Canada (IIAC)—the voice of Canada’s investment dealer firms—and principal spokesperson, I advocated the policy positions of the Association’s 120 investment dealer Member firms to the federal and provincial governments, regulators, international organizations, the media and the general public. These dealer firms are the key intermediaries in Canadian capital markets, accounting for the vast majority of financial advisory services, securities trading and underwriting in public and private markets for governments and corporations. Sweeping regulatory changes, technological innovation, the proliferation and complexity of new products and services, increased competition, shifting demographics, evolving investor preferences and ever increasing demands for state-of-the-art client interface are affecting the operations and performance of Canadian investment dealer firms. My obligation as IIAC CEO was to orient the mandate of the organization to assist Member firms through representation and support to develop and execute strategies to succeed in meeting these business challenges.

I proudly served as Chairman of the International Council of Securities Associations (ICSA), a role that enabled me to promote and raise awareness of Canada’s securities industry and our capital markets internationally. I continue to take every opportunity when I meet with global regulatory bodies—such as the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) and the Financial Stability Board (FSB)—to urge greater regulatory cooperation and coordination across jurisdictions to facilitate cross-border transactions and to improve market liquidity and depth to the benefit of Canada’s investment dealer firms.

Served dual roles as an industry regulator and trade association. Was the national self-regulatory organization of the Canadian Securities Industry. Monitored Member firms from coast-to-coast in terms of both their capital adequacy and conduct of business. Listened to the views of Canadians to ensure various perspectives were taken into account when formulating national policies and rules governing industry practices and standards.
