About Ian Gilbert
I am a full stack software engineer specializing in the C#/.NET stack with Angular and Microsoft SQL Server, though I also have experience working with Python and Java. I focus on building high quality, maintainable APIs and clean intuitive user interfaces. I believe that having clear standards of code quality, structure, documentation, and testing are critical to writing effective and maintainable code that will survive and thrive as both the applications and team evolve over time. I enjoy working collaboratively with a team to achieve these standards and build positive relationships. In my free time I love to find challenging side projects that allow me to explore new areas, for example one project I have been working on is an Ultimate Tic Tac Toe game, with various bots that utilize the minimax and Monte Carlo Tree Search algorithms. The application is written in .NET with MongoDB, with an interactive web client written with Angular. Outside of software development I have a love of music, movies, and TV, and I am a massive Arsenal fan.

Sr. Associate Software Developer
I have worked on both internal and client projects, mainly focusing on full stack development using C#/.NET, Angular, and MSSQL.My primary project has been with John Hancock, where I have been working to replace legacy applications with ones written in a more modern cloud/microservices framework to support their financial reporting processes. I have been responsible for leading development of these applications from the ground up, from the initial design phase through to initial deployment. In addition to writing the application itself, this involves reading and interpreting the legacy code as well as communicating with the business to clarify existing requirements as well as add new ones. I initially began working mostly by myself, but over time more people have joined my team assisting in the development of the applications. Due to my performance in this role I have taken on many of the responsibilities of a tech lead, such as leading initiatives to improve our code review and testing processes, as well as setting standards to push the team to write the highest possible quality code. From a technical perspective the applications take in user input from various sources, including Excel, text/csv files, form inputs, and other API calls, they then validate and manipulate the data according to various requirements and configurations, and finally store it in a database. The data is then extracted to generate reports that are used further in the financial reporting process. As these data requirements often change, the applications are highly configurable, relying as much as possible on the database to read, validate, modify, and format the data. Our frontend services are written in Angular with PrimeNG and Bootstrap to help create a clean and responsive UI, our backend services use ASP.NET WebAPI, with tools such as EPPlus and ClosedXML to work with the data inputs, and we use a MSSQL database to store data as well as perform functions with stored procedures.
Software Developer
I completed a 10 week bootcamp-style training course for full-stack web development using C# and the .NET stack. The training covered a wide range of topics, including C# and the .NET ecosystem, SQL and database design, JavaScript and Angular, and various DevOps tools like Git, Docker, Kubernetes, and GitHub Actions for CI/CD. We used Azure to host our applications and practiced Agile methodologies to complete our projects. After completing the training, I began a 2 year contract working for Cognizant, one of Revature's client companies.
Pool Manager
I led a staff of lifeguards that could exceed 40 members during the summer months, although we were open all year. I worked directly for the director of aquatics, facilities, and maintenance for the school district, and was almost always the most senior on-site manager at any given time. My responsibilities ranged from IT support for the computer systems controlling the scoreboards and timing systems, to managing events, staff, and scheduling conflicts, and I even assisted with general maintenance around the school campuses.I regularly planed and managed large swim meets and water polo tournaments with over 1,000 participants, which required that I be able to maintain professional contact and communication with all of the organizers and managers. For example, in the summer of 2018 I took on the role of Site Director for the National Junior Olympics for water polo. This meant I was in charge of the whole facility, and had to communicate with all of the parties involved: my staff operating the facility, the refs and desk-workers running the games, the teams and parents attending the games, and the overall directors of the National Junior Olympics.
Software Engineer
I assisted a startup in the development of a financial application, written mostly in python and using AWS. I had responsibilities in all aspects of the development process, from writing and testing, front and back-end development, and security with OAUTH2. In particular, I was responsible for creating an AWS Lambda Authorizer to authenticate users, which allowed users to enter their data into tools we wrote for different programs, such as Slack, Google Sheets, Excel, and PowerBI. I also implemented the OAUTH2 Protocol in our Google Sheets Add-on, which was written in JavaScript using ReactJS.
Co-Author Of A Cryptography Textbook
For my math thesis, I co-authored a full-length textbook on cryptography. The majority of the book was written collaboratively by nine students and a professor. This section covered everything from simple shift ciphers all the way to RSA, Diffie-Hellman, and Elliptic Curves. The remainder of the book consisted of individual contributions, of which mine was to write an entire chapter on quantum-secure lattice-based cryptosystems. Here, I covered everything from the Merkle-Hellman Knapsack Cryptosystem to GGH, NTRU, and Lattice Reduction Algorithms like LLL. I also mentioned current research into fully homomorphic encryption.
Optics Research
I joined an optics lab in the physics department as a Sophomore, and continued through the remainder of my time as an undergraduate, as the project ultimately became my physics thesis. Our goal was to use laser ablation to alter the physical properties of various materials. In particular, my thesis investigated creating hydrophobic surfaces on brass, copper, and stainless steel. This involved using a picosecond pulsed laser to create microstructures on the surface of the metals, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to view the structures, and building our own contact angle goniometer to measure the wettability of the samples.
Physics Lab Teaching Assistant
I was the head TA for all but my first semester, which meant I was in charge of setting up the lab each week. My regular duties consisted of helping the students work through their lab work, answering questions and reinforcing the concepts taught in class, and then grading their lab reports. I unfortunately was not able to work my last semester due to a scheduling conflict.
Holographic Reconstruction Lab
As a Junior, I took a physics class on advanced lab work. During this class, we had a two-week break where we got to work on a small project for no grade. Instead, two of my class mates and I took it upon ourselves to set up a spatial light modulator (SLM) that the university had just bought. The department was looking for a project they could use to incorporate the SLM in future iterations of the class, so we found a way to use it for holographic reconstruction of an image. As we were the first to do this project, we ended up taking it on as a side project past the two weeks, and wrote multiple papers about it. The project is now being continued by current students in the class.
