About Ian Graham
Hi! I'm Ian.I'm one of those "Elder Millennials" you've heard so much about -- all the native digital savvy of the Youth of the New Millennium, and all the cynical ennui of Generation X. My "tech career" started early: I learned HTML in the 5th grade in an after-school program, and spent the next few years playing and learning to build multi-user online games (MUCKs, MUDs, and MUSHes, for the Real Nerds out there) and building plugins for Escape Velocity. But like any millennial stereotype thinkpiece would tell you, I've worn a lot of hats in my career. I got a degree in journalism and worked as a reporter and photographer before finding my way back to the world of digital/tech. Over the past decade or two (who's counting, right?), I worked in digital communications -- social media marketing, email, content production, and strategy -- for a variety of companies from non-profit advocacy groups to the federal government. For the past 6 years, I've been focusing on the world of email (and most recently, deliverability).I'm also the owner and operator of Fair Game Skateboards, a boutique (read: "very small, but on purpose") producer of skateboard equipment and accessories. I started the company in 2015 because I saw that there were new niches opening, and an expanding market for skating that's low impact, hyperlocal, weird, or highly relatable. We make limited-edition things for limited-edition beings, full of inside jokes (for outsiders).

Email Deliverability Specialist
As a Deliverability Specialist for 14W, I act in a hybrid consulting/compliance role. I advise clients and management on email best practices, including authentication, list hygiene, mitigating bounce/block issues, sending tactics, email/form security, and targeting/segmentation. I monitor delivery and work with clients, internal teams, and mailbox providers to mitigate any delivery problems. I also help oversee (and maintain documentation for) our sending infrastructure, to ensure there are no "own goal" technical errors causing delivery problems. In this role, I'm primarily two things, at the root. First, I'm a problem-solver: if I see a problem, or someone brings me a problem, I fix it or find out who can fix it. Second, I'm a communicator: Anybody who's been in a deliverability role knows you're often the bearer of unwanted news. So part of my job, in the process of solving clients' delivery issues, is to clearly communicate any issues as they arise, and develop a rapport with my client contacts, so I can deliver bad news with a better sense of empathy and understanding. I attended the M3AAWG conference in 2020, 2021, and 2022.In 2020, the Deliverability Team oversaw a major migration, in which all client companies were moved from an on-premises sending configuration to cloud-hosted services. In 2021, we (like the rest of the email universe) had to grapple with Apple's Mail Privacy Protection. We were able to guide implementation of new data-processing tactics we could use to gauge the impact of MPP on client mail, as well as train clients on MPP and other proxy opens. As an avid consumer of email-industry webinars, I'm comfortable saying we were at the leading edge of companies adjusting to the so-called "new normal."In 2022, I helped develop a new internal knowledgebase, providing up-to-date industry news and white papers as well as internally produced training materials and informational articles about our platforms and email best practices.
