About Ian Douglas

A member of the Cousteau generation, my career and intense curiosity about the natural world has taken me to more than 80 countries. Diving in a submersible in the Cayman Islands, counting coral trout on the Great Barrier Reef, or live-trapping grizzlies for a home-range study in the coastal rainforest, my attention to detail and perseverance brings each project to a successful conclusion. My fisheries career began at the Harkness Fisheries Laboratory when I was in high school, and I completed an undergraduate degree in fisheries and wildlife biology at Guelph University. My university work experience included a CIDA lobster and conch study in Grenada, live-trapping grizzlies for a Canadian Wildlife Service telemetry study and running a DFO chinook fish-wheel tagging station on the Yukon River. After graduation I worked for a consulting firm conducting fisheries and wildlife surveys. During a five year circumnavigation of the Pacific I worked for the Great Barrier Marine Park Authority as a research diver. My aquaculture adventure began when I met with Japanese fisheries officials in Tokyo in 1984, followed by a tour of a coho facility in Shizugawa Bay. Later I toured Alaskan sea-ranch hatcheries and surveyed the BC coast for potential aquaculture sites. I set up a chinook and coho grow-out site in Sechelt while securing the necessary permits and financing for my own company. Starting my own chinook grow-out operation in 1987, I anchored pens, arranged smolt and feed delivery, trained staff and contracted harvest crews for five years. Since then I have helped develop geoduck aquaculture equipment, and worked for both provincial and federal aquaculture regulatory agencies, conducting First Nation engagement and enhancement projects.A founding member of the Canadian Freelance Guild, I've written two books and more than a hundred articles for corporate clients, trade and the popular press. “Ring of Fire”, one of the popular Blue-water Cruising Series at the Vancouver Planetarium, and “Follow your dreams and sail off into the sunset,” about circumnavigating with my family, are two of my multi-media presentations. My education experience includes teaching humour writing at North Island College and English at Huazhong University in Wuhan, China. I was also a member of the creative team that developed an online education module for the oil and gas sector. I filmed the inaugural 1999 VanIsle-360 Round Vancouver Race and was filmed by a Discovery Channel crew for a marine ranger segment in Great Canadian Parks.
