Part of a small and highly focused group of engineers and management with the common goal of developing high quality breathing devices in order to enhance lives.

Being part of a small, remote R&D group afforded me the opportunity not only to grow my core competencies, but also to expand my capabilities through involvement in the myriad of tasks that were necessary during the development of a complex medical device. My key accomplishments included:• Power and mixed signal schematic design as well as layout of rigid, flex, and rigid-flex PCBs for all custom system electronics.• Design and modeling of system cables and interconnects in SolidWorks.• Leading cross-functional effort to successfully engineer the overall shielding, grounding, and isolation topology in order to meet the regulatory requirements for medical device safety and radiated emissions (IEC60601-1). • Effective use 3-D electromagnetic field simulation software in order to lead the successful development of a high-speed micro-positioner that is the heart of the system hand-piece. Other contributions included:• Design, construction, and documentation of test-stands used by technicians for assembly and by quality assurance for in-coming inspection.• Writing specifications, release documentation, and procedures for test and assembly.• Verification and validation (V&V) testing and reporting for design history.• Rapid prototyping for testing and proof of concept.• Development of custom LabVIEW control software for testing.• Mechanical design using SolidWorks.• Post production cost reduction (VA/VE).• Participation in risk analysis meetings to identify/mitigate hazards for risk assessment.• The use of root cause analysis (RCA) on field returns to engineer appropriate corrective action.

Lumen Labs provided engineering consulting, product design and instrumentation manufacturing services to military, aerospace, medical, and industrial customers. Its specialties included electro-optics, mixed-signal electronics and precision mechanics.• Designed and sourced optical, mechanical, and electrical subassemblies for several scientific and industrial products including a 5-axis laser milling machine used to cut diamonds.• Worked extensively with optics for the delivery and collection of light from a variety of sources, including several types of lasers and high-brightness sources.• Designed multiple mechanical subassemblies utilizing precision linear and rotary stages and wrote accompanying LabVIEW code for control.• DARPA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program – wrote LabVIEW code for the control of several electro-optical subsystems used in an early-warning bio-aerosol detection system.• Set up and maintained an in-house repair facility for laser systems used in the medical device and aerospace industries yielding greater than 50% profit margins.• Led several projects to redesign current products of outside manufacturers in order to reduce the size and enhance the serviceability.• Contracted by outside manufacturers to act on their behalf for worldwide installations and support of aerospace and industrial equipment.

Manufacturing Engineer (1998 – 2000)• Identified and resolved a scanner (galvanometer) issue that resulted in more than a 6x increase in lifetime which virtually eliminated field returns.• Enhanced existing production test stands and processes to incorporate new product designs.• Involved in activities for achieving UL and CE approval of laser template system.Customer Service Engineer (1993-1998)• Traveled worldwide to install, service, and train on the use of laser projection systems used in aerospace manufacturing.• Performed sales demonstrations in-house and at customer sites.• Personally received an award from Boeing for outstanding support.• Wrote all training material, often tailored to specific customer software and applications.• Worked with product-line engineers to find and resolve hardware and software issues.
