Ian is Deputy Vice Chancellor: Systems and Operations, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Previously he served as Dean: Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, from 2014 to July 2021.He is also a Personal Professor in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at Wits.Ian holds directorships of: Crown Publications, Engenamic, the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, and the Wits Incubator. Ian is a trustee of the Accenture Education Trust in South Africa.At Wits Ian is joint leader of the High Voltage and the Lightning/EMC Research Group. He has an NRF C-rating as a researcher and is the author or co-author of more than 100 papers in the areas of High Voltage Engineering, Earthing and Lightning Protection and Industrial EMC.Ian is a Member of the Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP) and the IEEE International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application (ICHVE). He is registered as an International Professional Engineer on the International Register of Professional Engineers (IntPE(SA)) of the International Professional Engineers Agreement (IPEA), and is a registered Professional Engineer (PrEng) in South Africa. He is regular consultant to industry in the areas of forensic engineering, earthing and lightning protection and industrial EMC. Ian is a Senior Member of the IEEE (SMIEEE) and served a three year term as a member of the IEEE Herman Halperin Award Committee. He is a Fellow of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (FSAIEE), and a Fellow of the South African Academy of Engineering (FSAAE) and a member of the Executive Committee.In 1994 Ian was named SAIEE Engineer of the Year, and in 2011 he was named as the recipient of the SAIEE's premier award, the President's Award. In 2018 he received the NSTF-South32 award for Engineering Research Capacity Development.Specialties: Research in HV Engineering, Earthing, Lightning and Forensic Engineering.
