I have worked across high end professional consultancy, advertising, data & mobile, public relations, marketing consultancy and sports marketing.My background is in growth businesses, often at the point at which they have taken on growth investment for the first time or are at the point of professionalising for the next level of growth.I’m a “hands on” CFO. I build professional and commercial finance teams and upgrade systems to deliver improved reporting on not just the financials but across the business operations. Both teams and systems are kept cost effective but built for future growth.I understand what drives profitable growth in a creative agency/consultancy, and I have many years’ experience of increasing billability and utilisation to increase profit margins whilst growing top line revenue.I qualified as a Chartered Accountant with BDO in their media team and was Finance Director at Interbrand before becoming European FD for the FutureBrand Group. In 2005 I became a partner/owner in a VC-backed media agency start-up which bought and amalgamated the in-stadia media rights in the majority of the UK football stadia. I led the management buy in and subsequent exit sale before becoming CFO/COO at ?What If!, the innovation company and more recently Chief Financial Officer at PE backed Karma Communications Group, building the group through acquisition and joint ventures ahead of the exit sale to Accenture in Nov 2016. Most recently I was CFO at VC backed Limelight Sports, a sports marketing and event ownership agency, and completed two acquisitions and concluding with the sale of the events business.I am a regular gig and festival goer. Business sold to Accenture in November 2016.• Over two years increased 6 month operating profit from £517k 1st 6 months of FY14/15 to £2.2m last 6 months of FY15/16• Initial loss making position in Q1 2014 improved into a 6mth average 20.3% operating profit margin (average Oct15 to Mar16)• Cash position improved from requiring a £2.25m overdraft (which I negotiated with RBS) to +£5million cash at bank.• Led the negotiation of a debt/equity restructure with PE partners and other internal and external investors.• Negative balance sheet position of -£29m improved to a positive +£1.5m• Long term debt restructured from £45m to £15m• Actioned and implemented the strategic positioning of “one agency, one P&L” through the legal and structural merger of the separate legal entities increasing cross group revenues from existing clients.• Merged individual accounting packages onto one single database and replacing existing project management systems with one single group system enabling cross group project management reporting, resourcing and billing.• Led and completed the successful acquisition of a tech based digital/mobile agency for £7m.
