I'm starting my third career. I've had two successful ones already, one in research (30+ publications, 10 patents) that spanned about 10 years, and one in software development (from software developer to CTO) that covered about 15 years. I'm looking for a totally new challenge where product management meets engineering. There are times in a company's or product's life where you need both.In my career I’ve worked closely with numerous product managers, and on a couple of occasions I’ve done the work typically associated with product managers. When I worked at Xerox I had the good fortune of working with a user experience researcher and I spent approximately six months doing what some people call “requirements development.” We were sure that there was a new and better email experience for users, but figuring out what that experience was and why it was better was quite challenging and exciting work. When I worked at YikYak, although I was in engineering formally, I was expected to do “whatever it took” to get the key new feature out the door on time for “back to school.” In this capacity I had to do a lot of the soft influencing to get other parts of the organization to help me with their area of expertise whether that was mobile UI, internationalization, mobile testing, marketing and even legal. The legal angle was critical because the feature presented a danger that a motivated, bad actor might be able to discover the physical location of users without their consent. This presented numerous legal challenges (especially in the EU) and I had to work to convince other parts of the organization—-over their objections in some cases—that the design I had proposed for the feature provided the best experience for users while providing them with the safest environment possible and minimizing our legal exposure.
