The objective of the role is to identify, determine root cause and correct any reliability related issues, whether car or team related, in order to improve the performance of the car / team for next car outing.Perform constant review of the car design with the Chief Designer for this and following years car design, through FMEA and assess the team’s reliability relative to other teams throughout the season. Car Reliability risen repeatedly for past 10 years, achieved 98% in the last two years, only surpassed by MGP.

Responsible for the analysis of all composite and metallic components across the car, requirement to optimise the mass while still matching strength & stiffness. Upkeep of loads generation & materials database to encompass temperature & fatigue data from MMPDS.Optimisation of metallic components (using OptiStruct) to provide design with potential lightweight solutions. Liaison with R&D and reliability to understand and correct failures and improve component life. Communication to younger members of the team to help develop their role in the structures group. Involvement in recruitment of other members with Head of Structures.

Working in the mathematical modelling group using Finite Element analysis to improve the structural/dynamic behaviour of the VH71 (EH101 derivative) helicopter. Responsible for the FEA and correlation of the static UK test of the VH71 presidential airframe and presentation of correlation within AgustaWestland & Bell. Further FEA correlation for Ground Vibration modal testing of the rotor head and engines to improve and update the dynamic model of the CIV01 for correlation to future full scale modal testing to eliminate blade passing frequencies (5R). Linear forced response in LMS Virtual lab (VL) to access engine damper effect and elevation of specific modes. FEA of miscellaneous items throughout the airframe principally to check for 5R avoidance. Software; LMS Virtual Lab (VL), Nastran/Patran.

Responsible within “Base Motore” for the structural analysis of the major structural components of the 056 engine (V10 & V8) including cylinder block, heads, sump and head covers with the objective to develop and improve these components. Tasks included structural/dynamic analyses of these parts (temperatures, displacements, stress and fatigue) generation and presentation of technical reports to Engine Department. Objectives were to develop and improve these components through liaison with the engine group, R&D and test; implement non-linear structural analysis techniques and offer experience and guidance to others in the use of ABAQUS and RICARDO software.

Worked for the European truck manufacture IVECO at their R&D site in Switzerland. Responsible for the structural analysis and design feasibility of the family of 1st generation light duty 4V DI diesel engine cylinder heads for the IVECO DAILY (MY01). Coupled thermal and structural analyses of cylinder heads, blocks and exhaust manifold

Responsibility covered the project management, structural analysis and design support of the Land Rover 'Storm' engine project for future Discovery II vehicles (MY99), and powertrain bending for M62 V8 Range Rover (MY99), these projects typically valued between £100k-£2m.Other projects including bore distortion, structural fatigue of connecting rods, dynamic analyses of minor engine components, and non-linear (elastic-plastic) structural analysis of IDI & DI 2V/4V cylinder heads. I planned, budgeted, helped procure, setup, managed and developed a calculation department for the first Metal Matrix Composite company in the UK. I grew the group to five engineers, in the UK, Spain & Switzerland, across Aerospace, Defence, Automotive and Autosport industries.I leant to communicate at Director level, supporting the Managing Director, travelling across Europe representing the company and providing the technical support to the business. MMC Projects analysed: large calibre tank barrels, rocket motor bodies, F1 brake caliper, automotive connecting rod.
