As the Medical Director of the Center for Acute and Critical Care at Maastricht UMC+, I have the privilege of leading a dedicated team of professionals who are deeply committed to delivering exceptional care for acute and critically ill patients. With experience spanning over two decades as a clinical researcher, intensivist, and cardiologist, I am fervently dedicated to serving our teams and patients and their families. Additionally, in my role as a professor and chair of the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at Maastricht University Medical Center+ and Laurentius Hospital, I also have the honour of serving as the principal investigator at Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) and the medical manager at the Network Acute Care Limburg (NAZL). Clinical Researcher And Principal Investigator

I was the principal investigator of the Simple Intensive Care Studies (SICS). In this ongoing registry, we included up to 2000 patients to unravel the diagnostic and prognostic value of physical and physiological examination. Based on the variables included, physicians make clinical decisions for the sickest patients every day. The design paper is published in the BMJ Open.I was a leading investigator of clinical studies on critically ill patients. We were focussing on hemodynamics, the heart in non-cardiac disease, and acute kidney failure at the ICU. Our team was involved in initiatives that combined the best of a prospective cohort study (like SICS-I, SOCCS and SICS-II) and randomised controlled trial design. The protocols were based on the results of systematic reviews (see Prospero).I was also a co-primary investigator in clinical studies on myocardial infarction and heart failure, especially about (glucose) metabolism. Like the Metformin to Reduce Heart Failure After Myocardial Infarction (GIPS-III), NCT01217307. With this study, we obtained a grant from the Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMW; project no. 40-41200-98-9139). Over 20 publications out of this structured study have been published.Therefore, I was an investigator in the Glucose Insulin Potassium Study (GIPS) I and II, supported by the Netherlands Heart Foundation (99.028 and 2003B277). Studies on the diagnostic and prognostic value of routine laboratory measures in critically ill patients. Implementation study on secondary prevention.
