I have the honor of representing the members of our national society and contributing to the council's efforts to advance our initiatives.

The objectives of the Cardiovascular Dynamics Section are to support education and research in cardiovascular dynamics from pathophysiology to treatment and to improve physicians’ knowledge of cardiovascular dynamics to improve patient outcomes. It aims to be a reference point for intensivists interested in cardiovascular dynamics and to increase collaborations worldwide.Teacher at the hemodynamic masterclass.

As one of the medical managers in the Network Acute Care Limburg (NAZL), I am responsible for guiding acute care to fulfil current and future challenges to balance supply and demand. This strategic role aims to be fit for the future. NAZL exists to work every day on a more robust and more intelligent healthcare network within the Limburg healthcare task.

I am part of a team dedicated to monitoring and big data in critical care patients. A big database is created and cleaned for specific questions regarding mortality. The first projects focus on clustering and validation of prediction models. With the heart on team science, this research line is open to collaboration.

As the Medical Director, together with the Business Director, I am leading a dedicated staff team. The Center for Acute and Critical Care is a hub of true professionals specialising in treating acute patients. Our team is highly trained and experienced in providing top-notch care for individuals facing urgent medical needs.Within our centre, we house a range of specialised departments, including Intensive Care, Medium Care, Cardiac Care Unit, Emergency Department, Acute Admission Unit (AOA), and Recovery. As one of the supervisory board members, I help make decisions to create a solid organisation by challenging, advising, and forecasting.

The working group on Cardiac Care will try to increase the knowledge and skills on acute cardiology. The focus will be on managing acute patients and therewith help in developing training, implementing guidelines (like the recent guideline on Intensive Care) and relationships with external allied societies.

Based on knowledge and skills obtained in other appointments, I am invited to serve as an independent specialist on subjects such as management of crises, (ethical) decision making, and collaboration for the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports (VWS) and the Center for Ethics and Health (CEG).

The Journal of Critical Care, the official publication of the World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care (WFICC) and the Society for Complex Acute Illness (SCAI), is a leading international, peer-reviewed journal that aims to improve patient care by publishing manuscripts that contain new or updated information that can be integrated into clinical practice, with the exception of experimental research.

I was the president of the Society. Therefore, I was the treasurer. As president, I led the board and was responsible for fruitful collaboration. Together, we created a vision for the upcoming years. Our mission is to make our vision work.The Dutch Society for Intensive Care (NVIC) is an association for intensivists and doctors interested in intensive care medicine. The association was founded in 1977 and currently has over 900 members.The association has usual members (GIC-recognized intensivists) and IC fellow members (those who are training to become intensivists). It also has extraordinary members (doctors and other professionals interested in Intensive Care Medicine).

I was the principal investigator of the Simple Intensive Care Studies (SICS). In this ongoing registry, we included up to 2000 patients to unravel the diagnostic and prognostic value of physical and physiological examination. Based on the variables included, physicians make clinical decisions for the sickest patients every day. The design paper is published in the BMJ Open.I was a leading investigator of clinical studies on critically ill patients. We were focussing on hemodynamics, the heart in non-cardiac disease, and acute kidney failure at the ICU. Our team was involved in initiatives that combined the best of a prospective cohort study (like SICS-I, SOCCS and SICS-II) and randomised controlled trial design. The protocols were based on the results of systematic reviews (see Prospero).I was also a co-primary investigator in clinical studies on myocardial infarction and heart failure, especially about (glucose) metabolism. Like the Metformin to Reduce Heart Failure After Myocardial Infarction (GIPS-III), NCT01217307. With this study, we obtained a grant from the Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMW; project no. 40-41200-98-9139). Over 20 publications out of this structured study have been published.Therefore, I was an investigator in the Glucose Insulin Potassium Study (GIPS) I and II, supported by the Netherlands Heart Foundation (99.028 and 2003B277). The focus of research within CAPE (Critical Care, Anesthesiology, Peri-operative and Emergency Medicine) is on the restoration and maintenance of vital homeostatic functions in vulnerable patients during emergency care, perioperative procedures and critical care.

Started as deputy chair and became chair to continue the program and innovate on education and training. Implemented structured lines on education on clinical and research knowledge and skills.

Staff member at the Department of Critical Care. As medical coordinator a member of the management team of our Department. The goal is to maintain the team work at the unit and pertain the learning environment for (young) physicians, fellows and nurses.

During the first three months at the Department of Anesthesiology, I was trained in airway management, arterial and venous access with echography, and (non-) invasive hemodynamic monitoring. I successfully passed the internal exam (green light), which allows you to start up singly.After that, I worked for three months at the Neuro Intensive Care Unit (ICU). I continued improving skills like vascular access, echography and ultrafiltration and at the Surgical ICU, taking care of patients after higher-risk surgery. During the three months at the Internal ICU, I was trained in supervision and focused on acute and chronic airway management. At the Thoracic ICU, I worked for six months with mechanical circulatory support and supervised the ward. During my second period at the Neuro ICU, I was improving my skills in neurologic diagnostics and scoring systems.Teacher on echocardiography (UMCG), introductory course Intensive Care (UMCG), and basic airway management (NVIC).

During the first years after specialisation, I supervised the Cardiac Care Unit, the Emergency Ward and the outpatient clinic on secondary prevention after acute myocardial infarction. One of my specialities was echocardiography, both at the outpatient clinic and during cardiothoracic surgery.

The central part of the accredited residency program. I received dedicated training in echocardiography, coronary angiography, and nuclear imaging.

Teaching on Intensive Care Decision Making: pattern recognition, intuition, forward thinking, cognitive pitfalls.

Member in the role of a teacher I participate in the OCG. We critically review and give advice on the Bachelor and Master of Medicine.

Coordinator of the Bachelor Thesis & Product in semester 3.2 of the Bachelor Medicine G2020 Groningen. This unique period of 14 weeks will give students the opportunity to work in a team on a product that is important to a patient or patient group. Based on science but focussing on the real impact.

Lecturer of the Dutch and International curriculum. Lectures on pathophysiology and treatment of acute coronary syndromes, shock, ARDS. This year will be involved within the themes airway, breathing and circulation and (cardiogenic and hypovolemic) shock. Lectures on general science, i.e. how to read a scientific paper?, how to write an abstract?, evidence based medicine.Former member of the Clinical Reasoning Group involved in lectures on a great diversity of themes to teach history taking, the importance of predictive value.Former member of the Exam Committee (Toetsbeoordelingspanel) with the goal to certify all exam questions and therewith the exams of the Medical curriculum till April 2015.Former Nucleus member of the Learning Community Intramural Care of the G20202 bachelor Medicine of the University of Groningen. Responsible for the theme Good Clinical Practice on the basics of clinical research, clinical epidemiology and reviewing.

With all coordinators we are responsible for the training on competencies of students in the Bachelor Medicine in Groningen. My special interest is the role of Scholar.

At the ESC 2012 the working group became an association. Therewith the Acute Cardiovascular Care Association (ACCA) can expand its aims.I was involved in the Toolkit and preparation for examinations.Faculty at the ESC 2012-2014 and ACCA 2012-2015: Lectures on how to survive the nightshift at the Intensive Care Unit, cardiogenic shock, inotropes, ABCDE approach. Accreditated in Acute Cardiac Care. I was an active participant of the first summit. As a faculty at the ESC 2012 in Munich I lectured on the pharmalogical treatment in acute heart failure during an ACC session.

Editing many manuscripts especially on acute heart failure, metabolism and treatment of severe heart failure.
