About Adam Gordon

Becoming a 1st-time manager at a startup transitioning to enterprise exposed me to an incredible number of challenging situations that even had my director remarking, "You're being exposed to situations that even managers with ten years' experience haven't had to deal with." And indeed, I had to grow up quickly.I made mistakes—lots of them. But I'm coachable and hungry, so I learned from them and made new ones. Wash, rinse, and repeat - because if you're not growing, you'll stagnate. As a result, I embrace feedback, especially the hard-to-hear stuff.Passions:• Building talent density via a thorough hiring process that targets skills and values alignment. Because when you have a high-performing team, you can focus on the needs of the business.• Maintaining talent density via performance management to ensure an individual is executing at the expected level and having the tough conversation if they are not.• Leading cultural revolutions to ensure we're operating with small amounts of friction and large amounts of transparency.• Encouraging safe-to-fail experiments to enable growth mindsets.General History:• Full-stack web application development using NodeJS, JavaScript, Typescript, and React.• Cradle-to-the-grave software development encompassing both back-end and front-end software engineering.• Provide remote and on-site client support for developed and delivered software.Specialities: User Interface (UI) and Web Application architecture, design, and development.Website: https://gordonizer.comGithub: https://github.com/icfantv

Engineering Manager, Ptv Reporting

Current

Austin (Remote) , Texas, Us

My team is responsible for all ad tech reporting within the MNTN platform. We own the reporting page in the MNTN UI and the data/ETL pipelines for our data warehouse. We own all the charting widgets, specialised reports, and the custom report builder. We also own the data APIs consumed by customers in the MNTN UI. My team comprises front- and back-end engineers, data engineers, and data scientists.

Oct 2024 - Present

Staff Software Engineer, Customer & Agent

Denver, Colorado, Us

As a manager, one of the first things I learned is that business needs come first. After 18 months of building a solid web platform and a team of stunning colleagues, a reorg meant my team's expertise was best utilised elsewhere and the team was shut down. While initially resistant (and I struggled, a lot), I transitioned to a Staff Engineer role, embracing the growth mindset I preached to my team. This new role wasn't part of my plan, but I'm committed to creating value and making an impact as a Staff Engineer.Observability: I tackled noisy alerts, creating focused dashboards and actionable notifications.Force Multiplication: I empower and encourage colleagues (peers and leadership) to always look for opportunities to drive the company forward. I do this via various avenues of timely and actionable feedback.Business Value & Impact:• I led my team's engineering initiative to provide up-to-date policy information and documents, reducing agency call volume by 60%.• I am creating a new, multi-tiered system design interview questions for candidates.• Driving profitability by working on the early-stage engineering planning for Commercial Auto.

Software Engineering Manager, Web Platform Engineering

Denver, Colorado, Us

My team is responsible for building platforms, tooling, and libraries to facilitate web development across all engineering using Vercel, NextJS, LaunchDarkly, and core component libraries. Our current initiatives are:• Moving all our UIs and reusable component system to a monorepo so updates flow to every dependent application in a safe and tested way as part of the same PR.• Building a "Canary Router" to allow us to migrate our remaining UIs safely and responsibly by utilising a percentage-based feature flag to route traffic. This initiative prevents costly production outages by decreasing the blast radius of any potential migration issue.• Borrowing Atomic Design principles to rebuild our component library such that it represents more flexible building blocks for our front-end engineers.• Understanding our stakeholders' needs to build cross-team solutions that enable faster development using sustainable design patterns. My responsibilities are:• Building and maintaining my team's roadmap and ensuring all our work maps back to the company and organisational goals and objectives.• Ensuring my team operates at the highest possible level, with limited friction.• Ensuring I am not a roadblock for my team and their effectiveness.• Ensuring that I am providing constant feedback and individualised coaching.Previous Initiatives:• Building a feature flag solution for all our application and service teams. This allows us to deploy safely, decrease our MTTD times, and allow dynamic configuration and experimentation. This initiative allows consumers to receive live updates on the fly without code changes or service restarts.• Moving our UI development experience away from local environments to ephemeral ones provided by Vercel. This decreases our MTTD times and allows us to achieve continuous delivery. Through this initiative, my team has cut delivery times from up to nine hours to a few minutes.

Software Engineering Manager, Automated Pricing & Decisioning

Denver, Colorado, Us

My team is responsible for building and maintaining Pie's rating and decision engines (algorithms) to determine how to proceed with a submission (basically, a request for a quote). This result could be rejection, referral to underwriting (for further evaluation), or generating a quote/price for the submission. Our initiatives are:• Driving towards self-service solutions whereby our stakeholders can modify their data independently without our intervention.• Supporting the development and training of new pricing models. This initiative allows us to build and utilise our datasets vs 3rd party.• Build the new pricing and decisioning engine for Commercial Automobile Insurance as part of our existing Workers' Compensation Insurance engine. This initiative allows a single engine to support multiple lines of business vs supporting multiple, different engines.• Modifying the engine to support multiple carriers (underwriting entity routing based on, e.g., calculated/desired risk). This initiative allows Pie to write against multiple companies to spread risk and allows us to price competitively.

Apr 2022 - Nov 2022

Staff Software Engineer, Billing & Payments

Denver, Colorado, Us

I am currently focused on building out the Billing + Payments team (filling it with stunning colleagues), ensuring stakeholder alignment, driving a redefinition of our hiring culture by ensuring we filter for the right candidates and conducting cross-company discovery meetings to determine future opportunities.I work closely with the manager to establish this team as an example of how to build/operate engineering teams at Pie, refine any additional leadership/management skills, and then lead a team. I am currently spending my time 50/50 between strategic and management tasks. My primary responsibilities are:• Participate in the narrowed interview panels for Directors, Managers, and ICs.• Revamp our hiring processes by building out an interview question bank targeting our operating principles and identifying the key questions to ask of candidates.• Develop a new front-end interview assignment to target current needs.• Identifying the coverage and gaps around monitoring and alerting in the billing and payment systems before leaving the team.

Jan 2022 - Apr 2022

Staff Engineer

Denver, Colorado, Us

Senior Software Engineer, Media Platform

Pleasanton, California, Us

The Media Platform Engineering team is responsible for building Workday's interactive HTML5 media player. We support regular, in-page usage (like YouTube), embeddable into other Workday apps, and browser-based mobile use. The player is interactive in that it can be configured for use in a learning/training environment (like Workday Talent Management, https://www.workday.com/en-us/products/talent-management/learning.html) having the user answer questions as they proceed through a session.• Various UI work (features, bug fixes, etc...) in React/Redux/Typescript• Participate in customer calls to hear about our product (what they love, what they hate, missing features they wish we had) and take this context back to the team to drive planning and discussions. This ensures it's not always falling on PM.• Working with PM and leadership to determine quarterly roadmap, level of effort for initiatives, and establishing quarterly OKRs.• Working with leadership on hiring and interviewing.• Operationalised our testing processes to establish speed and confidence in product development and testing. It involved a heavy dose of Jenkins pipeline work in Groovy. Successfully able to increase our pass rate from 30% to 95%.• Always looking for teaching opportunities within and without my team to help us all become the best versions of ourselves.Non-team Activities:• Active Productivity Technology org's Principles Committee member, responsible for creating our organisation's operating principles.• Mentoring one mentee in incident management.• Mentee of a Principle S/W Engineer who made a management transition and returned.

Jan 2021 - Oct 2021

Senior Software Engineer, Devops

Pleasanton, California, Us

I was at a crossroads in my professional development a Workday, having worked myself into a position where I could no longer see a viable, long-term career path. I had to decide: return to the full-stack UI space or expand on my operationalisation work and experiment with a 6-month DevOps rotation through our Delivery Engineering org on the Production Engineering team. I chose to take a risk and opted for the rotation to gain perspective that I could take back with me to a product team should I decide that I didn't want to stay in the SRE world. My work entailed:* Adding multi-environment support to our Golang admin servers,* Hardening our Ansible template generation by writing some Python scripts to validate that our Ansible roles were defined and existed.* Assisting product teams in debugging and deploying their applications across different environments using Docker, Helm, and Kubernetes. In the end, I discovered I didn't enjoy the engineering style of SRE and chose to return to a product team.

Jul 2020 - Jan 2021

Senior Software Engineer, Flow Writer

Pleasanton, California, Us

Flow is a Workday application that allows developers to build conversational flows between applications using NLP.Originally written as a stand-alone UI application, it needed to be returned to the Workday UI. I own this process which includes wiring the UI into the Workday stack, migrating the UI from a web server to Workday's Static Asset Service (CDN) and included writing a generic NodeJS API to interact with the CDN, migrating from Bitbucket and Bamboo to GitHub Enterprise and Jenkins, and building new Jenkins pipelines for building and testing the application.

Feb 2020 - Jul 2020

Senior Software Engineer, Notification Designer

Pleasanton, California, Us

Building out/owning the new Notification Designer UI tool within Workday Comm Tech. Notification Designer is the design tool companies use to communicate with employees/contractors, recruiting to communicate with candidates, and universities to communicate with students by building out email templates for standard design. The CA side of Comm Tech was recently moved into the Productivity Technology organisation based primarily out of Boulder. As the only remote IC in Boulder for the CA teams, I'm wearing many hats helping other teams become assimilated into our collective concerning operations, CI, testing, etc...Rebuilding the UI to be more React-like (application component tree and state management), moving the business logic to be close to the components for which it's meant, and simplifying UI artefact deployments.

Nov 2019 - Jan 2020

Senior Software Engineer, Chromeless Ui

Pleasanton, California, Us

Software is only as good as the foundation upon which it's built. Workday Worksheets was a startup acquisition, and the architecture of the core grid rendering, scrolling, and selection logic was no longer maintainable in its current form. I wrote a Technical Strategy document and, with a Jr Engineer, we experimented with different ways to rearchitect this. We reverse-engineered how other software products (Microsoft Excel for the Web and Google Sheets) handled this and captured performance metrics for our experiments and the solutions from Microsoft and Google. After our research and experiments, we showed that a homegrown solution was better than incorporating a 3rd party library, and it was twice as fast at rendering as Google Sheets. This work resulted in a 2900% increase in rendering speed from 2 FPS to 60 FPS.I presented these findings to leadership and got the go-ahead to form a new team whose initiative was to architect a reusable sheet viewer React component on top of an HTML5 canvas and change the data fetching logic to match.Abstracting the sheet away from the consumers allowed us to own the critical pieces around performance and selection. My work centred on building the unit and integration testing infrastructure using Docker containers, Jest image snapshots, and TestCafé.

Feb 2019 - Nov 2019

Senior Software Engineer, Worksheets Web

Pleasanton, California, Us

Lead architect for the Workday Worksheets web team for the Productivity Technology organisation in Boulder, Colorado. First and foremost, I believe that pure software architecture roles are an anti-pattern, as I believe that software engineers should have the freedom and responsibility to develop software as they best see fit. If it's "right," great! If it's not, we'll fix it and move on. My primary focus is to eliminate the need for my current position.Worksheets is a cloud-based, collaborative spreadsheet web application built into Workday’s technology platform. This means Worksheets users can not only source data from elsewhere within the Workday platform (revenues, expenses, cost centres, etc...) but can also, if desired, push data back into the platform via Budgeting, Planning, and Forecasting. As the architecture team lead for Worksheets Web, I am responsible for shaping/driving product engineering decisions and helping implement those decisions on both the architecture and feature sides. Additional responsibilities include mentoring Jr. team members as applicable and contributing to their professional development. This is done via code pairing and both group and one-on-one conversations. Our team is multi-track with the architecture side, primarily researching and determining best practices for React/Redux applications and executing the migration from AngularJS to React/Redux. The feature side develops new features in React/Redux.

As Netflix engineers are responsible for the entire end-to-end process of the software development process, this included working with stakeholders to gather requirements, update those requirements as development progressed, deliver the product and support/maintain the feature post-delivery.• Supporting the Spinnaker application for Netflix engineers via a rotating, on-call support cycle.• Developing relationships with other engineers and teams and seeing how Spinnaker might help them solve problems either via existing or new features.

Sr. Engineer/Ui Lead

Stamford, Ct, Us

Lead engineer for backoffice UI initiatives. Projects typically started with a greenfield approach, making/justifying recommendations, and then architecting and implementing those recommendations.Built our next-generation UI (AngularJS) for our subscriber information application that allows media services to sell highly-targeted advertising slots based on subscriber demographics (e.g., all the subscribers in a zip code who make between $100k and $200k annually with at least two kids, two cars, and a mortgage, etc...).Assisted in the development of our second generation entitlements calculation platform for customers and their devices (e.g., mobile) that determines, real-time, whether or not a given customer has permission to view any given content. The platform provides REST interfaces for entitlement operations and serves up both metrics and state-of-health information. Subsequent work included working with 3rd-party partners to design the next phase of the platform to support time-window based entitlements (e.g., movie rentals, pay-per-view, etc...).Previously responsible for the technical management and direction of three engineers and the mentoring of a fourth.
