About Ian Mackenzie-Thurley

Ian MacKenzie-Thurley attained his Bachelors Degree in Music from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane, Australia, graduating in 1994. After completing his studies he established an independent Young Artist opera company, UpStart Opera. He then furthered his studies with a post-graduate diploma in directing at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney. As a stage director he has been involved with productions that range from opera and drama through to cabaret and musical theatre. Notable productions have included Hamlet, Don Giovanni, Dial M for Martini, L’elisir d’amore, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, Men of Harlech and the Welsh National Opera’s Nine Stories High. During his time as a producer with Andrew McKinnon Presentations his role included programming, budgeting, artist & agent liaison, logistics and marketing. He oversaw the re-branding of the company profile, expansion of the online presence and was involved in the presentation of local and national tours.After moving to London, Ian was a producer and director with Klimt Productions, a company that served as an arts consultancy to larger production and theatre companies, providing artistic support and strategic advice on programming, repertoire, casting and workshops. During this time he was also invited onto the lecturing staff of the Guildhall Music and Drama and the University College of the Arts as well as being made Chair of the Advance Arts & Entertainment committee in London. Ian was appointed as the inaugural Artistic Director of The Constellation Project in North Wales. There he produced and directed outdoor theatre in Harlech Castle, published bi-lingual community writing projects, curated large public art projects and developed new theatrical writing.Ian took over as Executive Director of the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton in May of this 2015 and has overseen a comprehensive restructure of the Fitton Center’s artistic programming, community outreach & engagement, branding and administration.
