In 1988, my wife Sarla Prakash and I established the India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF) intending to provide grassroots assistance to India's marginalized population. I took an early retirement from my position as an economist at the World Bank and have been a full-time volunteer for IDRF in Maryland, USA.The goal of IDRF, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity based in the United States, is to empower marginalized people in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka to end the cycle of poverty. At IDRF, we firmly think that locals must take the initiative and drive change for it to be long-lasting in underdeveloped areas. IDRF's strategy gives the impoverished control rather than charity. IDRF raises funds in the US and assists non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka in delivering services such as healthcare, education, microloans, safe water, micro-enterprises, local governance, biogas plants, environmentally friendly local businesses, disaster relief, and rehabilitation, etc. The underprivileged are served by IDRF's programs regardless of their religion, color, caste, or creed.At age 90+, and having lost my eyesight due to medical negligence, I am still very active in all aspects of running IDRF – interacting with donors, meeting NGOs, assessing project proposals, etc.
