I am now a director at Sleigh & Story! Sleigh & Story is now co-owned by me and Jonny Stead. Debbie Story and Peter Sleigh, the co-founders of Sleigh & Story had planned to retire in December 2020. It had always been the plan for someone to take over the business internally for the firm to continue with the same passion and values upon which it was founded.I have loved working at Sleigh & Story as its values matched mine, which was to put clients and colleagues at the forefront and to be honest and caring in our day to day activities. Having the opportunity to commit and be a part of this was a no brainer for me. We planned to handover in December 2020 officially, but to actually start being the ‘directors’ and making the decisions in 2019 in order for it to be a smooth transition and that’s exactly what it’s been!On 31st December 2020 we handed over, came back into the office on the 4th January only to pack up and continue working from home on the 5th January! We have taken it in our stride and focused on being here and supporting our clients. These are extremely tough times for businesses and our focus is on our clients – we continue to support them by being there for them however they need us.We are wanting to grow our client base as we have the capacity and the ability to support both our existing and new clients. When I moved to Sleigh & Story, I wanted to move into a role which had a predominant focus on clients.After working in accountancy and having had a wide exposure to all aspects of accountancy, I realised that I had a love for dealing with clients and making sure they were happy with the help, support and service they and their business were receiving from me and the company. This role involved having a full portfolio of clients and reviewing financial accounts, finalising them with clients and being the clients main point of contact should they need anything throughout the year. In this role, I found who I was and where I wanted to be. I wanted to be the accountant who anyone can turn to for advice and an informal chat whenever that may be. I loved that Debbie and Pete had given me the full flexibility to handle my portfolio.I found great value in providing clients with information that was useful for them in order to progress their business or save time in what they were doing so that they can use their time effectively elsewhere.As a manager, I was given responsibility for training up two members of staff who were studying their AAT. They progressed onto their ACCA, and I was able to train them and be the manager for them who was able to support them and give them the time they needed to find their feet and flourish in their role.In this role, I took on a variety of roles of improving processes, being involved in software compliance. We went to exhibitions, and we made the decision as a firm to move onto Xero in order to be Making Tax Digital (MTD) compliant. We were early adopters, and I was responsible for managing this move within the firm.

As I became more experienced in accountancy, I completed all my ACCA exams and progressed to becoming an accounts senior.I had my own small client portfolio. I was responsible for the preparation of monthly management accounts, quarterly accounts, vat returns, year-end accounts, corporation tax and personal tax returns for those clients including ad hoc services.I managed two accounts staff; one was AAT qualified and one was studying towards their AAT. I supported them through providing on the job training and also helped them with their studying.I started seeing clients face to face and going out to meet with them using their Sage and preparing financial accounts.I was responsible for all charities within the business. Preparation of charities accounts, submitting accounts to the Charities Commission and Companies House. I would liaise with charities and trustees directly and attend AGMs and quarterly meetings for finance updates.I also provided ad hoc services to clients, for example; due diligence information, tax advice upon the sale of properties and leaving the UK rules for tax years.I was able to prepare and finalise financial accounts and tax returns for sole traders and limited companies using CCH Accounts production.My time at Broadbent’s expanded my knowledge, experience and skill set required to work as a fully-fledged accountant in due course.

This role saw me take on the duties of a trainee accountant. I started studying the ACCA exams at BPP and worked full time as a trainee accountant. It was great to have on the job training at the same time.Studying the ACCA and working was challenging but completely worth it. My role involved:- Preparing financial statements for sole traders and limited companies which involved using Microsoft Excel for preparing the working papers.- Using CCH Accounts production for producing the financial statements.- I did quarterly bookkeeping and prepared VAT returns.- Monthly management accounts prepared for clients using Sage Line 50.- Corporation tax and personal tax computations prepared for clients.- Basic payroll processed using Sage payroll.

This was my first job in accountancy, I graduated from University of Bradford and took some time out.I was so grateful to Prakash Bohorun for giving me my first break. They didn’t have a role, but he took me on to give me some work experience and it was fantastic. I quickly progressed to helping on the accounts and being a junior in the firm. I worked on auditing charities accounts, preparing the audit programmes and undertaking audit tests. I learnt about company accounts, preparing financial statements and accounts using Sage Accounts Production and Microsoft Excel.I experienced my first 31st January self assessment deadline which thankfully went very well! I calculated and submitted tax returns for corporations and individuals using PTP platform and CT Platform.I undertook bookkeeping for accounts and VAT using Sage line 50.As my experience grew, I was able to correspond with clients regarding their accounts and tax returns. I also had exposure to the admin side of accountancy regarding engagement letters, year end letters, payslips and accounts.
