IWS was founded in 1957 in Lagos by a group of public-spirited women to help the less privileged. Women are one of the most powerful agents in bringing about world change. When women are educated, healthy, and safe, we hope, empower other women, lift families, communities, and the world. As a result of IWS’s focus on female development and empowerment, over 5,000 pupils have been trained in our Day Nursery School and Skills Acquisition Center, and approximately 2,000 widows have been empowered… Show more IWS was founded in 1957 in Lagos by a group of public-spirited women to help the less privileged. Women are one of the most powerful agents in bringing about world change. When women are educated, healthy, and safe, we hope, empower other women, lift families, communities, and the world. As a result of IWS’s focus on female development and empowerment, over 5,000 pupils have been trained in our Day Nursery School and Skills Acquisition Center, and approximately 2,000 widows have been empowered in various vocations. We have 6 main projects: 1. The Day Nursery, Yaba was set up in 1961 to meet the needs of the market women and low-income workers in the catchment area. 2.The LUTH Trolley Library was launched in 1964 and thereafter, in 1968, the Society had a library at LUTH. Before the COVID pandemic, IWS members and friends visited multiple wards every Wednesday, offering comforting words, reading to those too frail to do so, distributing books, magazines, Bibles, and Qurans as well as helping raise funds towards much-needed equipment and the payment of bills for those unable to.3. Our Scholarships Program started in 1982 and provides scholarships to deserving girls, from primary through tertiary, to enable them complete their education. 4.The Widows Trust Fund was set up in 1989 to assist widows who have no set skills with which to fend for their dependents. 5.Social Services – the main functions are visits and welfare programs as well as the IWS Home for Abandoned Children, Ijebu Ode which was established to help the plight of abandoned babies and children. 6.Our Skills Acquisition Center was established in 1998. It is a fully equipped training school that is NABTEB-certified. It is located on the Lekki-Jakande Expressway and was established to give students a sense of purpose by learning a skill, finding placements for them when they graduate, and rewarding their focus with tools of their future trade having seized the opportunity to empower themselves.
