Founder - PresidentDetroit Air Racing, Inc. Nov 2007 - Jun 2009It occurred to me that Red Bull Air Racing along the Detroit River was a perfect fit given our international boarder with Canada. A cold call to Red Bull's was returned on Nov 23rd, 2007 requesting a proposal. A 40 page document was sent counter-to-counter to Salzburg, Austria 4 days later, and on December 7th, 2007, Red Bull Air Race officials landed in Detroit. Following a helicopter tour of the city and presentation with community and business leaders from the both US, Canada and General Motors, the idea was a hit on all sides. On February 5th, 2008, following an extensive bid process, Detroit was selected as 1 of 8 locations in the world to hold this prestigious event. For the first time in Red Bull Air Race history, over 750,000 spectators gathered in 2 cities in 2 separate countries with the race box positioned in International waters between the United States and Canada. The race was televised in 136 countries around the world by Fox Sports, and yielded over $100 million in economic impact for both Windsor, Canada and Detroit, MI. Since the inaugural race in 2008, Red Bull Air Race returned to the banks of the Detroit River with over $15 million in sponsorship for 2009 and 2010. The race was scheduled to return to Detroit in 2011, but due to some very close calls this year, Air Race will suspend production to evaluate and implement additional safety measures for both pilots and spectators.For more information: www.RedBullAirRace.Com
