My name is Ilan Gelman. I am a JD graduate of the University of Houston Law Center. My family immigrated to the United States from Uzbekistan in the '90s in pursuit of greater health and economic opportunities amongst other reasons. I am a first-generation American, first-generation university student, and first-generation graduate student; I have regarded myself as an academic trailblazer in my family as a result of the obstacles I had to teach myself to hurdle to obtain acceptance to the UH Law Program. Russian is my first language–my trial began at a young age in having to transition to an educational system in English via ESL courses. Being raised in a different cultural background in the United States was difficult at times, however, my family took pride in hard work and perseverance having humbly hailed from small villages in the Eurasian region. These characteristics amongst others stuck with me throughout my work-life and my undergraduate career. As soon as I received a driver's license at 16 I was getting out of the door to work part-time jobs. I worked in various career sectors, typically bouncing between restaurant environments, delivery driving jobs, or sales positions as I moved around the state of Texas for school. Through these opportunities, I've developed a strong passion for people—making connections and hearing the stories and experiences of individuals from all walks of life is a central focus of mine. I graduated from The University of North Texas with a B.A. in Psychology, a Political Science minor, and a Legal Studies Certificate. I was, and am, involved in extracurriculars as well, including the UNT First Generation Student mentorship program, and more recently, serving as the Chief Advisor for UH For The Students–A political organization dedicated to serving students on campus and the surrounding communities. In the Houston area, I've volunteered with organizations hosting food and vaccine drives, attended social initiative events such as Moms Demand Action at the Houston City Hall, and assisted receptions for Child Tax Credit information at the Leland Federal Building. As a result of my community involvement, I have met countless Houstonians and established connections with local politicians including Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, District Attorney Kim Ogg, and Mayor Sylvester Turner.As I continue my journey, I am driven to excel as a legal professional. I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, knowing that each experience contributes to my growth and ability to effect positive change.
