Having been established with Diamond since early design stages (prior to build), I have been responsible for the design, development, testing and commissioning of the particle accelerator control systems. From field-side interfaces to distributed control systems (VME running VxWorks and Linux servers), through to publishing of process variables and development of user interfaces. Some interesting challenges presented themselves along the way, which were brought to a successful conclusion using innovative concepts based on sound engineering methodologies.The role carries responsibility for a team of technicians.Collaboration with other particle accelerator establishments and observatories, has allowed me to generate a worldwide network of influential peers.I have written and presented technical papers to the international community at various conferences.

This software is now in use in laboratories in several countries world-wide.4. Design of Windows based application for a customer for marketing as an automated Quality Safety Audit system. Written exclusively in C++ using Booch OOA/D methodology.5. Windows based programme scheduling and control system for a television company based in Helsinki - Finland. This included communicating with a PDP/11 which acted as the real-time controller.6. Control, data acquisition and analysis for a pyrolysis mass spectrometer. This software is now in use in several countries world-wide.7. Infrared Spectrometer materials analysis application, employing spectral correlation and instrument communications. This software is now in use in laboratories in several countries world-wide.

Real-time software development for the automated manufacture of radioactive materials.

a) Detection, identification and quantification of radioactive isotopes in the environment.b) Gamma ray spectroscopy of multi-nuclide sources.c) Calibration of radioactive secondary standards, including software development of mathematical and reporting tools.e) Neutron captivation cross-section calculationsX-ray/Gamma-ray spectrometry. Responsible for the qualitative & quantitative analysis of mixed nuclide sources, using Si(Li) detectors. This work necessitated a comprehensive understanding of nuclear decay mechanisms, detector physics and detection effects such as : Backscatter, Compton edge, escape peaks, sum peaks, Bremstrahlung radiation, detector cutoff, noise, environmental background etc.The work also involved maintenance and configuration of all associated electronic equipment such as the alignment of pulse height analysers, in particular recognising and eliminating line reflections, calibrating detector systems and ensuring the overall integrity of the systems. Although computer essentially determined the spectral peaks and integrals, the actual isotopic identification and estimation were performed manually. Consequently I became expert in identifying many different nuclides and isotopes very quickly and an appreciation for statistical significance, especially when peaks were approaching minimum detectable levels.
