Ignacio E. Tapia, Md is a Batchelor Endowed Chair in Pediatric Pulmonology at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Colleagues describe him as "Dr. Ignacio Tapia is a trailblazer in the field of pediatric sleep medicine. It was a pleasure to work alongside and learn from him, during my 6 formative years at CHOP. Dr. Tapia has received NIH funding for his clinical and translational studies, which have resulted in numerous publications in high impact, peer reviewed journals. He lead the pulmonary fellowship at CHOP for almost 10 years, focusing on medical education and fostering the careers of the next generation of physician scientists, by ensuring a T-32 grant for pediatric pulmonologists in training, and by participating in the ASPIRE program at PENN, which aims to train next generation of future Sleep physicians. He has lead the Research at the Sleep Center at CHOP after the sudden passing of our beloved mentor Dr. Carole L. Marcus, with nothing but grace, efficiency and devotion to moving the field forward, while supporting a large team including nurses, clinical coordinators, mentees, all the way to his peers and his co investigators. He has received R01 grants in order to investigate further the impact of Sleep disordered breathing in vulnerable pediatric populations, such as in children with Trisomy 21. He is a great advocate of health equity. Dr. Tapia has been involved in several committees both at PENN and within NIH. A testament of his work, is that he is currently nominated as president elect of the pediatric assembly at the American Thoracic Society (ATS). Of all his achievements though, Dr. Tapia’s most special trait is not his curiosity, intellect or his technical skills, but the ability to connect with people from different backgrounds on a deep, personal level, which makes him a unique, insightful, trust worthy, empathetic and elegant leader."
