As the Systems Engineering Manager for the Time Based Separation Project, I have been responsible for the planning, coordination and execution of all the Project Engineering activities required for the development and deployment of the Time Based Separation solution for Heathrow approach (Swanwick Terminal Control) and tower.This is the world first implementation of time based separation in final approach based on a SESAR concept in one of the busiest airports in the world. The engineering solution was developed using an iterative and incremental development methodology based on an agile framework that has allowed maximum flexibility while protecting timescales and costs.Time Based Separation successfully entered operation in March 2015 and since then it has delivered resilience for the landing rate under headwind conditions above the estimated benefits. Since then, the Time Based Separation solution has undergone further refinements and continues providing improved capacity to the Heathrow approach.
