About Igor Bačkalov

Naval architect experienced with both research projects and engineering assignments, member of the team awarded with the RINA-Lloyd’s Register Ship Safety Award for 2007. Holds PhD degree in technical sciences.Participated in long-term technology research associated with future developments in design and operation of seagoing and inland cargo vessels. PhD thesis on nonlinear motions of ships in realistic / extreme weather conditions, and development of innovative risk-based ship stability regulations. Published a number of scientific papers.Notable short-term assignments included: calculations of a wave energy conversion device; investigations of stability accidents on the Danube; stability analysis of an innovative inland container vessel design; assessment of buoyancy and stability of atypical floating structures equipped with large cranes (used in construction of bridges); seakeeping of a jack-up rig in wet tow in the South China Sea; a salvage operation of damaged and grounded cargo ship in Adriatic. Experienced with software for hydrostatics and ship motions calculations. Experienced with European R&D projects. Member of the expert group on external costs in inland navigation, in the FP6 Coordination Action IMPRINT-NET. Member of the project team in the FP7 Collaborative Project MoVe IT. Leader of the University of Belgrade research group in the EU Danube Region Strategy project Innovative Danube Vessel. Leader of the University of Belgrade research group in the H2020 project NOVIMAR. Member of the project team in the H2020 project NOVIMOVE. Work package leader in the HEU project AUTOFLEX. Member of the project management task force in the HEU project SYNERGETICS.Interested in positions and projects related to ship technology (design, stability, seakeeping) and sustainable transport solutions (inland waterways, maritime transport, intermodal transport).Specialties: Ship stability and seakeeping studies; Risk-based ship stability regulations; Nonlinear ship motions; Dynamic stability of ships; International maritime regulations; Inland waterway transport.
