I co-founded Data Understood based on a need I was seeing in many organisations I had worked with - their inability to see and use their data easily. Often the perceived complexity of data prevents organisations from using their data and their internal resources effectively. My passion is in helping our customers see their data in a simple way, giving them the tools to understand it, and showing them how they can best act upon data and its insights to achieve their strategic goals.

I joined Broker Insights when it was a start-up with the aim of enabling the Broker Insights platform to embrace data analytics and machine learning to drive efficiencies, and transform the commercial insurance marketplace. I worked with brokers and insurers to determine the relevant information required. This involved harmonising and enriching broker data with data from Companies House using string matching algorithms. This data was then transformed for inclusion in the platform to provide valuable insights to brokers and insurers.

My appointment within brightsolid was to build and manage an analytical consultancy business. My clients included organisations from industries including fintech, insurance, local councils, housing associations and charities. Our aim was to understand their goals and issues and determine where analytical solutions would improve their workplace.

I was responsible for key quantitative and data projects ensuring key stakeholder management; accuracy; quality; and reliability. I translated research findings into valuable insights to drive revenue and profitability for the business. Within my role I evaluated data, deployed statistical models and made recommendations based on business strategy, ensuring that all activity aligned with business strategy.

I was responsible for market and customer segmentation, standardising research across the business, commercial modelling and business planning, web analytics and competitor and market intelligence. Over my employment I assisted DCTFH through analysing their business strategy to better listen to their market and their customers.

I studied renal complications in those with diabetes in Scotland within the Diabetes Epidemiology Unit. This research was part of the Wellcome Trust funded Scottish Health Informatics Programme (SHIP) which harnesses the power of Scottish data-linkage systems and clinical databases.I was also involved in a €30 million EU Innovative Medicines Initiative called SUMMIT (Surrogate markers for micro- and macro-vascular hard endpoints for innovative diabetes tools) developing algorithms to analyse measurements of lipids, metabolites, and putative biomarkers within serum. Through this work we identified candidate biomarkers which have shown evidence of improving the prediction of cardiovascular risk in those with diabetes.

During my time at Insights I managed a small research team which supported the global business. We ensured Insights’ portfolio was of the highest standard by providing the science behind Insights’ psychometric assessments and promoting market and customer intelligence. We also enabled the sales process through integrating and capturing ROI measurements to track impact.

I started at TFT as a Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP) Bursary Placement Student. During the placement I created an algorithm to mimic blood flow in an artery within a test rig. I was asked to remain at the company on a part-time basis.I was awarded First Place in the Tayside Regional Final, and the Judges Commendation in the Scottish Finals.
