Leading with purpose, bringing Hawai'i closer to sustainability and conservation.I have a background as a PhD research astronomer. I am now an Emeritus Astronomer, after serving as the NOIRLab Chief Sustainability Officer. In that position I provided overall leadership for the NOIRLab Sustainability Program. I led the definition of this program in my previous position as AD for Operations. The goal of the program is to lower the organization's carbon footprint from travel and electricity usage by 50% by the end of 2027. The program continues under different leadership, and NOIRLab is executing a number of projects to reach this goal: Installation of energy efficient equipment, reconfiguration of ACs, and installation of photovoltaic and battery systems for the facilities.I have experience in all aspects of management: personnel, money, projects, programs. In all cases, I take the approach of leading for the improvement of our collective environment, within the workplace and beyond. I have a deep interest in sustainability. I spearheaded the implementation of a very large energy savings program at Gemini, as part of the Transition Program which I led. Closer to home I run and manage a 100-acre homestead, where we experiment with a combination of nitrogen-fixing trees and goats for sustainable agroforestry. We have also reforested a small area with local koa trees. Feel free to contact me regarding opportunities to apply my leadership and management experience to causes and at companies that increase our collective sustainability and responsible land-use.
