About Ika Washington
I am a health and social development specialist focused on social impact, justice, and addressing health disparities, particularly within marginalized and racialized communities. With over 12 years of experience in healthcare, policy, and community engagement, I apply live(d) experiences and critical lenses to support organizations, clients and partners to conduct research (engagement), develop and implement programs and policies that tackle the structural and systemic barriers create (and reinforce) inequities (in)directly impacting quality of life, wellness, population health, public policy, disease/illness, mental health, addictions, and substance use outcomes.My experience spans a range of roles and sectors, including health authorities, Indigenous, Black and other racialized communities, government, clinical settings, research institutions, and nonprofit organizations. My multidisciplinary background has trained me to engage in my work from multiple perspectives, integrating research and practice to create sustainable, impactful solutions.Currently I’m an upper-year PhD student in Health Policy and Equity at York University's Faculty of Health. My research explores the intersection of healthcare systems, mental health, addiction, using a critical political economy (& critical health sociology) lens, focusing on marginalized Black communities (special focus on older adults and life course). I incorporate critical theory and EDIA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) principles to inform my work and promote more inclusive systems.As the founder of DiversityTalk, I also lead initiatives and provide educational materials focused on fostering inclusion, social justice, equity, and systemic change in healthcare and beyond, with previous clients including Canadian Blood Services, Heart and Stroke, Sioux Lookout Health Authority, etc. I am passionate about using my policy, research, and leadership skills to create transformative solutions that reduce disparities and improve well-being for all.
